Fletcher Vynne shines in senior all-star gamesposted 06/08/03
"He definitely was the cream of the crop," said Friday Harbor coach Rich Warin, who helped coach the event. The four-year Wolverine smacked a homer, drove in two runs, scored three runs in the first game. As catcher, he picked off base runner. In the second game, Vynne hit 3-for-4, stole a base and threw out a runner. Friday Harbor's Timmy Aylward went 1-for-3, reached base on balls and scored two runs. "Timmy played great defense," Warin said of the right-fielder. Fellow Wolverine outfielder Damon Woodward made "an outstanding catch along the left-field line," Warin noted. "We came two inches from a come-from-behind win," said Rich Warin. The Wolverines, who rallied late in several games this season, finished the season 14-4 overall, and 12-4 in conference. They won the Northwest A League and continued a tradition of competing in post-season play.
"I’m very proud of these kids," Friday Harbor coach Rich Warin said of the Wolverine sluggers. "It was a good year." The Wolverines three seniors will be missed next year. "We’ll never replace those three," Warin said of leftfielder Timmy Aylward, rightfielder Damon Woodward and catcher-pitcher-third baseman Fletcher Vynne. "Two of them helped form the best outfield in the state," Warin said. Vynne provided standout defense and offense as catcher and took up pitching at the end of the season. "Fletcher pitched a hell of a game," Warin said, referrring to the Bellevue Christian contest. Elliot Thomsen provided a defensive gem against the Vikings. "Elliot made a catch you only see the pros make," Warin said of the first baseman. "He jumped up on the dugout railing. A cleat caught on the wood railing and kept him from falling in the dugout," Warin said.
Aylward scored two runs and Vynne had two RBIs. "Peter Shanks had a good game," Warin said of the sophomore catcher. "He picked off a runner and had two hits and two RBIs." Friday Harbor scored first, tallying a run in the first inning. Aylward reached base on an error and Woodward was hit by a pitch. Vynne took first on an error and Aylward scored.
Bellevue Christian scored an unearned run in the fourth and two unearned runs in the sixth. The Wolverines tied the game 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth. Thomsen hit a single and Brady Ryan reached base on an error before Shanks singled them home. The Bellevue Christian centerfielder cranked a two-run homer and the Vikings added another run in the top of the seventh to lead 6-3. Aylward and Woodward started the seventh with singles. Westphalen reached base on balls and the Wolverines had the bases loaded with no outs. Vynne hit a potential double-play ball but beat out the throw to first and Aylward scored. With the tying runs aboard, Thomsen zinged the ball above the Viking first basemen. It was the "hardest hit ball all day." The defender extended, gloved the rocket and stepped on the bag for a double play.
"That was a great play. A normal first baseman doesn’t make that play," Warin said. The Friday Harbor coach thanked the Wolverine supporters who made the four-hour trip to Enumclaw. "We had four times as many fans as them and they only had to drive 25 minutes," Warin said. "It was unbelievable." | ||
