Wolverine boys spoil Braves' perfect league record

posted 02/08/03
Friday Harbor boys basketball squad Friday, Feb. 7 proved several narrow losses this season weren't flukes. The La Conner Braves, previously unbeaten in Northwest A League play, fell 53-45 to the Wolverines in the final game of the regular season.

"I'm just really excited to get out of here with a win," said Friday Harbor senior Danny Johnson.

"It's a perfect way to go out," said fellow Wolverine senior Nathan Smith, who scored 21 points in his final high school basketball game.

Smith corrected himself, saying, "going to the playoffs would've been nice."

The Wolverines finished 4-6 in Northwest A League play but won four of their last five games. They lost at La Conner by 1 point, and dropped three other contests by a five or fewer points.

"It's just too bad this team's sitting at home (during the playoffs)," said Rod Turnbull.

Friday Harbor's seniors -- Smith, Johnson, Damon Woodward and Fletcher Vynne -- led an intense defense that prevented the Braves from moving the ball inside to their big post players.

The Wolverine offense scored first and never trailed. Friday Harbor spurted ahead by 12 points a couple of times and the Wolverine ballhandlers kept composed when the Braves trimmed the lead to a couple of buckets in the second half.

Johnson, who finished with 9, scored a key basket with four minutes to go in the fourth quarter that put the Wolverines up by six. Junior Sean Anderson scored 7. Junior Travis Coulter chipped in 4 points off two crucial shots down the stretch in the final period. Junior Matt Cowell contributed 4, including a pair of free throws in the final minute. Sophomore Tyler Roberts had 4 and Vynne hit a free-throw.
