Friday Harbor's football team forced top-ranked Royal to rally for two fourth-quarter touchdowns in a 35-21 Class 1A State Semifinal victory Saturday, Nov. 27 in Kennewick. The Wolverines, who tied for third in the state with Napavine, finish their school-best season 11-1.

"They were ranked first in the state for a reason," said senior Tyler Roberts. "They did a great job bouncing back. They were fighters."

"We played our hearts out," Assistant Coach Shannon Plummer said. "If there was anything left on the field, it was sweat and blood. The kids gave everything they had."

Royal (13-0) advances to the title game Saturday in the Tacoma Dome Saturday, Dec. 4. The Knights meet Freeman, who beat Napavine 28-6 in a semifinal.

"I believe we played the 1A champion," Plummer predicted.

The Knights, who dominated most foes this season, posting an average winning margin of 46 points, knew they defeated a quality opponent. "They were very gracious winners. All of their kids were talking about us, how well a game had just been played," Plummer said.

At the Gridiron Classic in the Tacoma Dome the Knights likely will tell other Eastern Washington teams how tough the Wolverines played. "I'll betcha they don't say 'Friday Who?' anymore," Plummer said.

"That was the hardest hitting game I've seen this year," said assistant coach Greg Truesdale. "The boys fought hard until the end."

"It was a great year," said Tyler Roberts. "I'm going to miss all the guys, the coaches. I'm going to miss high school football."

"I'm sad it's over," said senior Winslow Cobos. "I definitely had some good times. It's an experience I'll never forget."

"We're going to miss the seniors, but wait 'til next year," Assistant Coach Truesdale said. "You have to knock on the door before you get in."

Friday Harbor led into the third quarter by limiting Royal's running attack, holding standout junior running back Jeff Jack, to 87 yards on 22 carries. "That's the least he's made all year," Plummer noted.

"Better than that we broke his PAT streak," Plummer said of Jack. He missed his first extra-point attempt in the first quarter against Friday Harbor.

The Wolverines were unable to stop the Knights' equally vaunted passing game, especially receiver and kick returner James Dykes. The senior returned a kickoff for a touchdown in the second quarter and caught a TD pass in the fourth quarter. He finished with more than 150 yards offense.

Junior quarterback Ray Valle was extremely efficient for the Knights, completing 13 of 15 passes for 150 yards. He tossed TD passes of 17 and 19 yards.

"You take away two of their players and you have two of the same teams sitting there," said Plummer.

Tyler Roberts led Friday Harbor's rushing corps with 115 yards. Cobos gained 40 yards on 13 attempts and scored a touchdown. Sophomore Tyler Hart returned a kickoff 87 yards for a touchdown and junior quarterback Chas Lawson had the Wolverines other TD.
