Friday Harbor High School Boys Basketball team fought hard and almost reached their goal of playing Saturday in the Class 1A State Tournament in Yakima. The team lost to Granger 52-50 in overtime in the semi-final game Friday, March 3. The boys made school history by winning their first round game Wednesday night.

The team started slow Friday but fought back and outscored the Spartans in the second quarter and pulled ahead in the third. The fourth quarter was neck and neck and the game went into overtime tied at 44.

Friday Harbor led 30-28 at the end of the third quarter. Granger led 26 to 20 at the half. The Wolverines improved in the second quarter outscoring the Spartans 14-12. Granger led 14-6 at the end of the first quarter.

Chad Stoddard was the leading scorer for the Wolverines with 16 points, Brock McNairy and John Hamilton each had 11, Tyler Hart had 8, Dylan Gerhardstein and Eric Rothlisberger each had 2.

Stoddard and two Granger players each had five personal fouls. Friday Harbor was 36.5 percent in shooting from the floor, 37.5 percent in three-point attempts including one by Brock McNairy with five seconds to go, and 50 percent in free-throw attempts.

Friday Harbor boys basketball team's quest for an elite-eight finish in the Class 1A State Championships fell a few points shy Friday, March 3. The Granger Spartans eliminated the Wolverines 52-50 in overtime in one of the most thrilling games this week in the Yakima SunDome.

"I'm so proud of the way the guys finished out the season... I couldn't have asked for more of an effort today," said Friday Harbor coach Rod Turnbull.

Friday Harbor finishes the season 19-6. Granger (21-5) plays for fourth- or seventh-place against tomorrow.

The Wolverines and Spartans sported two divergent strengths -- Friday Harbor reached the state tourney with its powerful height inside and Granger boasted short, lightning fast three-point bombers. The Wolverines slowed the Spartans' missiles at times but in the end they took their toll as the Spartans scored more than half of their points -- 27 -- by three-point shots.

Granger's 5-foot-8 sophomore guard R.J. Solis sank 5 of 12 three-point shots, including the game-tying bucket at the end of the fourth quarter and a key trey in the overtime. He scored 11 of his 16 points in the final two periods.

Friday Harbor held Edward Castro, Granger's 5-foot-5 leading scorer, to 13 points in the first three periods but the senior guard added 8 more in the fourth quarter and overtime. Castro sank 4 of 13 three-point tries and also provided a big boost at the free-throw line, hitting 7 of 8 attempts.

The Wolverines won the battle of the boards, out-rebounding Granger 43-35. They also blocked 7 Spartan shots and didn't eat any of their own attempts.

Both teams shot luke-warm at the free-throw line: the Wolverines were 9-for-18 and the Spartans were 9-for-17.

Chad Stoddard led the Wolverines with 16 points, including 8 in the fourth quarter. The senior forward yanked down 10 rebounds and made 4 assists.

Senior center John Hamilton scored 11 points for the Wolverines, grabbed 11 boards and blocked 4 shots.

Junior guard Brock McNairy broke out for 11 points for the Wolverines. Junior guard Tyler Hart chipped in 8 points and 6 rebounds. Senior guard Eric Rothlisberger contributed 2 points and so did senior center Dylan Gerhardstein.

Granger used its speed to spurt to a 14-6 first-quarter lead. The Wolverines began moving the ball inside and closed the gap to 4 points with a second to go but Castro sank two free throws for a 26-20 halftime lead.

In the third quarter the Wolverines shut down the Spartans. Granger's only points came on a pair of free throws by Castro. Friday Harbor showed patience in moving the ball around and after a layup by Brock McNairy the Wolverines went into the fourth quarter ahead 30-28.

Friday Harbor led 41-38 with less than four minutes to go in the fourth quarter after Stoddard scored on a putback and Hamilton sank a free throw. Like so many other points in the game, when the Wolverines thought they might have some breathing room, Castro sank a trey to tie the game.

Stoddard pumped in another bucket and Hamilton sank another free throw and the Wolverines went ahead 44-41 with 58 seconds remaining in the fourth. Again the Spartans countered with a three-pointer -- this time Solis -- and the game was tied 44-44.

The Wolverines had two opportunites to go ahead in the final seconds but failed to score.

Friday Harbor regained the lead in overtime on a bucket by Stoddard but Solis countered with a three-pointer to put Granger up 47-46.

Stoddard knotted the game with a free throw but once more the Spartans answered with a trey -- this one by Castro -- and Granger led 50-47. Castro nailed a free throw with 17 seconds to go to put the Spartans up by 4. Solis added another free throw with :11 left.

The Wolverines didn't quit, though, as McNairy drilled a trey with four seconds remaining.
