Vikings show outstanding sportsmanship at state

Story by Mathew Chasanoff

posted 11/14/05
The Orcas High School volleyball team capped off a terrific season with a trip to the State Volleyball Championship Tournament at Eastern Washington University with the top sixteen teams in the state. The highlight of the weekend was a fabulous five game match with LaSalle High School from Yakima.

Orcas came out strong, serving and blocking well, and hustling all over the court. The Lady Vikings were in control all the way and cruised to a 25-13 victory. Game 2 was similar and you could see the Orcas girls' confidence rising by the point. Sofia Padbury dominated the net, making block after block. At one point Cara Peacock served eight straight points en route to another 25-13 victory.

LaSalle was not ready to fold, however, and began playing much better. Orcas stayed close, led by the outstanding defense of Tiffany Holtman. In a tight, well played game, LaSalle pulled away for a 25-19 victory.

With the victory, LaSalle took that momentum and pulled out to an early lead in game four from which Orcas could not recover. LaSalle won game four, 25-12.

LaSalle's confidence was surging and they had huge momentum going into the decisive 5th game. They jumped to an early 4-1 lead, but Orcas stepped up their play. Trailing 6-9 with the match threatening to slip away, the Orcas girls dug down deep and were not to be denied. Padbury came up with two consecutive kills to tie the score 10-10. Then, at 12-12, senior Lindsey Tellefson nailed two straight winners, while Jenole Peacock served the final 3 points for a thrilling 15-12 victory!

Next for Orcas was the Toutle Lake Ducks, the District Four champions. Toutle Lake played almost flawless volleyball and won the first game 25-20. The Ducks scored the first six points of game two. While Orcas battled back, the Ducks prevailed, taking game two, 25-15.

Down two games to an outstanding opponent, the Orcas girls refused to give up. They came out in game three and played with grit and determination. Sparked by the spirited play of Sophie Sisson, Hailey Kukura, and Anika Thomas off the bench, and Muriel Gallo-Chasanoff's hustle and excellent defense, Orcas led for much of game 3. In the end Toutle Lake proved to be too strong, winning the third and final game 25-19.

In its final match of the season, Orcas faced perennial powerhouse Davenport. Davenport's powerful offense proved too much for the Lady Vikings, with Davenport prevailing in three games, 25-13, 25-14, 25-5.

Three Orcas girls were honored for outstanding sportsmanship at the tournament: Muriel Gallo-Chasanoff, Cara Peacock, and Jenole Peacock.

The tournament marked the final chapter in the stellar High School careers of seniors Hailee Kukura, Lindsay Tellefson, Sophie Sisson, Tiffaney Holtman, Jenole Peacock, and Muriel Gallo-Chasanoff.
