Wolverine defense shines in comeback winStory by Matt Pranger Andrew Scheffer and Brock McNairy returned interceptions for touchdowns as Friday Harbor rallied for a 19-9 victory at Kings Friday, Sept. 8, 2006. "It was a come-from-behind win and real test,"said Friday Harbor coach Richard Ledford. "I was really proud of our kids." "It felt good to beat a good program," Ledford said. The Wolverines, ranked No. 2 in Class 1A, improve to 2-0. Friday Harbor never trailed in the regular season last year but faced a 9-6 deficit in the fourth quarter against the Knights. The Wolverines drove 85 yards and Cole Franklin scored on a 1-yard quarterback sneak. Tyler Hart booted the PAT and the Wolverines led 13-6 with about six minutes to go. On the Knights next play from scrimmage, McNairy picked off a pass and returned it 32 yards. The kick failed but the Wolverines gained a two-score lead. "It felt better than any offensive touchdown I've scored because it came at a crucial point in the game," McNairy said. Trent Roberts tipped a pass on the Knights next possession and Hart hauled it in. Friday Harbor's third pick of the contest crushed any hopes the Knights had of rallying. Kings scored first in the meeting of Class 1A teams. John Park booted a 34-yard field goal in the first quarter. Scheffer intercepted a pass and returned it 19 yards in the second quarter. A pass attempt for the 2-point conversion failed and the Wolverines led 6-3. Kings regained the lead in the third period on Greg Uhrich's 12-yard touchdown pass to Jon Blauret. Hart blocked the PAT. Defensive lineman Michael GrosJacques made 10 tackles for the Wolverines. Roberts had 8 tackles and Stimpson made 6. The Wolverines compiled 294 yards of offense - 154 rushing and 140 passing. Hart rushed for 70 yards on 14 carries and Stimpson gained 61 yards on 14 attempts. Franklin connected on 10 of 19 attempts. McNairy caught 5 passes for 62 yards. Roberts picked up 47 yards on 3 tosses and Matt Rothlisberger had 31 yards on 2 receptions. |
