Friday Harbor High School senior quarterback Cole Franklin and a senior backfield shined in the Wolverines final regular season game. In a potential post-season preview, Franklin led the Wolverines to a 31-14 homecoming victory over Cascade Christian Friday, Oct. 20.

Franklin rushed 5 times for 66 yards, scored a touchdown, threw for 60 yards, scrambled for a couple of key first downs and was one of the leading defenders against the Cougars, ranked No. 6 in Class 1A at the time.

"I thought Cole had his best game ever," said Friday Harbor head coach Richard Ledford. "I'm proud of him."

Senior running back Tyler Hart also excelled in what likely is his last game at Friday Harbor's field. Hart gained 72 yards on 15 carries, scored three touchdowns and . Trent Roberts compiled 46 yards on 5 attempts. Senior Loch Stimpson and sophomore Austin Scheffer also contributed to the Wolverines ground game.

Friday Harbor improves to 7-1 and moves from No. 7 to No. 6 in WashingtonPreps.com's rankings.

"This game showed that we can play at a higher level," Franklin said.

"Cascade's a good team," Ledford said. "They played quick and physical… We played quick and physical."

The Wolverines next play in a district seeding game scheduled tentatively scheduled at Coupeville Thursday, Nov. 2.

Friday Harbor controlled the line of scrimmage most of the game. "I'm extremely pleased with our offensive and defensive line," Ledford said. "My hat's off to (offensive line) coach Darrin Scheffer. "He's played a big role in that offensive line growing up."

"Greg Truesdale has done an excellent job with our kids defensively," said Ledford, who also commended assistant coaches Shannon Plummer and Mark Tompkins.

Stimpson, a linebacker, led the Wolverine defense with 9 tackles. Linebacker Austin Scheffer made 7 tackles. Roberts, a linebacker and senior defensive lineman Mike Fyrqvist had 5 tackles apiece.

Friday Harbor's defense tallied 46 interception return yards - one more yard than Cascade's offense had in the air.

After a scoreless first quarter, Cascade Christian's Ben Johnson scored on a quarterback-keeper about a minute into the second period. Ian Storm booted the PAT.

The Wolverines knotted the game at 5:59 after Hart scored on a 13-yard reverse and Jordyn Taylor kicked the PAT.

Roberts ripped off a 23-yard run on the Wolverines' next possession and Hart tossed a 15-yard halfback pass, setting up Hart's 2-yard dart into the end zone with 30 seconds left in the half. The PAT failed and the Wolverines led 13-7.

On the first play of the second half, Friday Harbor's Michael Knowles prevented Tyler Savage from returning a short kick for a game tying touchdown.

Franklin, facing a 3rd-and-13, kept a drive alive by scrambling to the Cougars 2-yard line. Austin Scheffer bulled in for the Wolverines third touchdown with 6:32 to go in the third quarter. The 2-point conversion failed but Friday Harbor led 19-7.

Cascade Christian advanced to Friday Harbor's 15-yard line late in the quarter but the Wolverine defense held on a 4th-and-4.

Franklin, seeing open field on a 3rd-and-17, tucked in the ball and headed 25 yards up the field. A 25-yard toss to McNairy set up the Wolverines fourth touchdown. Hart headed left, then reversed direction for a 15-yard touchdown. The 2-point conversion failed and the Wolverines led 25-7 with 7:87 to go in the fourth quarter.

Friday Harbor denied Savage the end zone one more time. Savage took the kickoff and had one Wolverine to beat but Willie Burns, the last Wolverine defender, stopped him.

Cascade Christian's Bryan Ide caught a 10-yard touchdown pass with 4:31 left in the game. Johnson kicked the PAT.

Hart grabbed a tipped Cougar pass and returned it about 20 yards to the Cascade 12-yard line, setting up Friday Harbor's final score. The Wolverines moved the ball to the 1-foot-line and Franklin punched it over with a second effort with 1:19 remaining in the game. The PAT kick failed.

Roberts picked off a pass with 23 seconds to go, stopping any chance of another Cougar score.
