North Kitsap barely beats Orcas to win Double Handed District Championship

Story by Dez Bridgmon

This year's fleet racing districts, sailed in Vanguard 15s, was just as fierce as they have been in the past but two teams raced hard for the top. Both North Kitsap and Orcas Island left the field behind with low enough scores that the second day's rotation proved to be a nail-biting first-place win for North Kitsap.

Snow hit with a mean streak on Saturday morning, bringing on talk about changing weekends and venues for the 2008 Double Handed District Championships held April 19 and 20 in Friday Harbor. The weather was beating up the shore with temperatures dropping low enough that snow flakes were looking like "Cherry Blossoms" falling.

The sailors started to wonder if Mother Nature had different plans for the weekend. This was only the second weekend during the 2008 sailing season to have snow, the first was Island Cup on Orcas Island, just a mere month ago, but the winds were perfect at 10-15 knots.

The first few races went off without a hitch in the blowing cold. The sailors were surprised by the change in weather just a couple hours later. Spring arrived! The sun pushed through just as the Varsity and Junior Varsity courses were rearranged. Eleven teams from around the Northwest District fought tough to be the next District Champs.

Sunday morning started clear and warm. During the day the wind shifted from blowing cold out of the north to a warmer breeze out of the south leaving one race with a 180 degree wind change, making for a challenging race for those not watching the shifts.

The final results after the second round robin left the standing results of first place North Kitsap with 61 points, with a separation of only five points was Orcas Island with 66 points. Bainbridge rounded off the top three with 101 points with Lincoln in fourth with 137.

Kingston was in fifth with 141 points. The racing was close between the next four teams were a point spread of 8 points was the only thing that separated them. Port Townsend sailed into sixth with 163 points. St. Mary's was close with 166, Friday Harbor had 168 points and Mercer Island finished 9th with 171 points. As new teams to the district Central Kitsap finished 10th with 179 and Anacortes wrapped up the Varsity fleet with 233 points.

13 HS Sailing teams compete in regatta at Jacksons Beach this weekend

Sailing teams from Friday Harbor and Orcas High Schools will be competing with teams from 11 other high schools at Jacksons Beach this weekend for a chance to sail in the National Championship at the Mallory Cup at the Naval Academy in Annapolis next month. Races start at noon.

The competition Saturday, April 19 and Sunday, April 20 is for the Double Handed District Championships. This is a fleet racing regatta and requires one boat from each team. A JV and Varsity fleet will be running at the same time.

The organizers want to get in two full rotations of 15 races. They are hoping the weather cooperates and the wind blows long enough to get that many in for the first day. If not they'll continue to race on Sunday. While the ultimate goal is for two full rotations they can settle for one.

Friday Harbor's next regatta is a team racing regatta that requires three boats per team and uses the sailing rules and tactics more aggressively to achieve the lowest score. The first weekend in May the team is off to Bainbridge Island for their Team Racing District Championship that will lead the winning team to the National Championship at the Baker Cup in Minnetonka, Minnesota late in May.There will also be fund raising opportunities at Jacksons beach if the community wants to help support the Friday Harbor Team. All funds raised will go to help the Sailing Team with travel expenses, regatta entry fees, and boat damage deposits.

The team invites anyone interested in the Sailing Team to come out and watch first hand the growing District in action. The regatta this weekend is hosted by NWISA, The San Juan Island Sailing Foundation and the Friday Harbor Sailing Team.
