Wolverine softball team completes record season

Friday Harbor softball evades elimination; secures Tri-District berth

Story and Photos by Matt Pranger

Two days in a row Friday Harbor's softball team avoided playoff elimination and survived. The Wolverines pounced on Meridian in the first inning of the Class 1A Sub-District Tournament consolation final in Sedro-Woolley Saturday, May 10 and went on to a 6-2 victory. They advance to the Tri-District Tournament and open play at 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 14 against Chimacum at Sprinker Field in Tacoma.

"Our girls had their backs against the wall and came out swinging," Friday Harbor coach Kevin Carlton said of the Wolverines, who beat Coupeville in loser-out game one day earlier.

Nooksack Valley, behind Erika Ramstead's no-hit hurling, forced the Wolverines into a loser-out situation with a 5-0 victory in the first round of the sub-district tourney.

"Beth Ware pitched stellar," Carlton said. "That (Nooksack Valley) is a really good softball team."

The Wolverines' defense was strong against the Pioneers but shined against the Trojans. "We played great defense," Carlton said. "Shortstop Hannah Starr had six 6-3 put-outs."

Kerri Goff tossed the win for the Wolverines.

Friday Harbor scored five runs in the first inning against Meridian. Sunny Pascoe led off with a single and Kelsie Carlton also rapped a base hit. They advanced one base on a passed ball and scored on Kiersten Radden's single.

Goff reached base on balls and Lindsey Banry pinch-ran for her. Elle Guard ripped a double, driving in Goff and Banry. Maggie Anderson singled in Guard.

The Wolverines scored another run in the fifth. Radden and Guard reached base on balls and scored on Anderson's single.

Brooke Jangard also smacked a double for the Wolverines.

Meridian scored two unearned runs in the sixth inning.
