Viking spikers thwart Wolverine rally

Orcas Island's volleyball team stemmed a Friday Harbor fourth-game rally Thursday, Sept. 20 in one of the closest contested matches between the Vikings and Wolverines in several years.

"When it's between the islands it's going to be a tough battle," said Orcas coach Gregg Sasan said.

Orcas went up 2-0 by winning the first two games 25-23 and 25-18. Friday Harbor gained momentum by taking the third game 25-20 and led 23-19 in the fourth game. The visiting Vikings prevented a fifth game when Renae Harvey served out the game for the 25-19 victory.

"I didn't want it to go five games," Sasan said.

The Viking coach commended his team. "They're starting to play well together," he said.

"Sydney Harris is a great setter," Sasan said. "She did a great job for us."

"I was glad to see Lanie (Padbury) away, Sydney lead them and Renae finishing up with those serves."

The veteran Orcas coach was impressed with Friday Harbor's improvement. "With time they are going to get it together," Sasan said. "They showed it tonight."

Though the loss was disappointing, Friday Harbor coach Travis Mager was pleased with his team's persistence. "We were in every game tonight," Mager said. "The winning will come if we keep giving ourselves a chance."

"They never ever gave up. In years past that wasn't the case. I've never been more proud."

Sophomore Kayla Short and freshman Kelsey Barnes played strong at the net for the Wolverines. "They played a really good match," Mager said.
