Friday Harbor wins 2nd Annual Invitational

Friday Harbor High School Golf Team hosted three teams - La Conner, Mount Vernon Christian, and Lopez Island - at the Friday Harbor Invitational Golf Classic Friday, April 29, 2016 at San Juan Golf Club. Coach Jack Rice sent in the results and this article about the competition.

Medalist for the Friday Harbor Invitational went to Friday Harbor Second Team Captain Joe Stewart with an 84. This is a personal best for Joe. Runner up went to Lopez Tobin Arden, one shot back with an 85. Third Place was a tie between Scott Lindeman from LaConner and Erik Paton from Lopez with 88.

The golf god shined down on San Juan Golf Club on Friday. After a few sprinkles it turned out to be a beautiful day for golf. The Friday Harbor A Team turned in an impressive performance and won the event by 12 shots. The depth of the team is demonstrated by the fact that only 8 strokes separated the top 4 players. As their Coach, I am so proud of the way they played. There is nothing better than winning the tournament you host.

This is the second year for our tournament. My goal was to create an event that would act as a dress rehearsal for the District events we face in the month of May. I am confident the team is ready to compete at the State level. It’s going to be a fun next couple of weeks to see how far the they can actually go.

The story of the day for the men has to be the performance of Joe Stewart. Friday Harbor entered two teams and Joe was assigned the team captain for the B Team. As I mentioned last week, I wouldn’t be surprised if Joe won the Invitational and sure enough my premonition came true. What a round of golf he played! I had the opportunity to watch him play the 500 yard 5th hole at the club. It just happened to be the Long Drive Contest hole and Joe launched a drive that went down wind well over 300 yards and proceeded to knock an 8 iron 25 feet from the hole. He stroked the eagle putt dead center and we could hear the hoot and holler all the way to Griffin Bay.

The Lopez Ladies golf team did a clean sweep, taking 1st, 2nd and 3rd Place individually. They were lead by Emalie Hobi who turned in the low round for the day with a 125. Counting the low two players to make a team score, Lopez won the team event by over 20 shots. It was an impressive showing by Coach Tetu and his Team.

To make this tournament more fun we add a few tee prizes for the competitors. As stated earlier Joe Stewart won the long drive contest with a bombing 300 + yard drive. Long drive in the women’s competition went to Emalie Hobi of Lopez. Closest to the pin on number 6 went to our Keegan Hebert from Friday Harbor. Keegan not only got the KP he made the putt for a birdie 2. Closest to the pin on number 8 for women went to Kaeli Hovck from Mount Vernon.

Hosting a big Tournament like the Invitational just doesn’t happen. It takes a lot of work by a number of helpers. Over a half a dozen members from the San Juan Ladies Golf Association were there to help with registration to score keeping. Members of the Golf Club Board were there to support the team and help. The kitchen staff and Micha along with my Assistant Shawn Hendricks provided the man power to feed all golfers after the event. Ben gave the greeting on behalf of our Club and provided his expertise from setting the tee times to producing a first class score board.

Brian and crew had the course looking as good as we have seen it all year. To add to the excitement he had the greens rolled and the speed of the putts were just like midsummer speed. As you all know, fast greens make for fun golf. And finally, a big thanks to all the members of the San Juan Golf Club for allowing us to host the event at our great club. Thank You All.

We will take a few days off to recover from our first 18 hole match and then we will spend the next week getting ready for District, May 12 in Gig Harbor.
