Friday Harbor HS men's golf team and Lopez women's team are District Champions

This is my seventh year as Coach for the Friday Harbor Golf Team and this is our first Men’s District Championship victory. It was a controversial call, but as Coach, I decided to go with my experienced upper classmen to represent the team in the District Tournament. The back nine holes at the Gallery Club are ripe for a potential train wreck. With heavy forest lining the fairway on a number of the finishing holes, it was easy for the wheels to come off a golf swing. It took a lot of grit for a player to pull himself up after carding a double digit score on a hole.

My seniors dug deep and pulled it all together, to finish strong and the win. It’s tough to stand up on the tee of a par 4 and hit a six iron down the fairway. I watched player after player rifle long drives deep into the forest with the ball never to be seen again, unless Sasquatch happened to stumble upon it. All six members of the Friday Harbor team advanced to the next level.

Lopez Men’s team had a good day by taking first and second place individually. Jess Hargrove took third place in a match of the cards.

As expected the two 8th grade twins from Orcas had a good day on the course. Maia posted an 87 and tied the low man for the event. Zoe, her younger sister by minutes, came in third with a 110. Emily Van Dam of Grace posted a fine 101. Lopez won the Women’s District title with the entire team making it to the Tri District Tournament.

I am excited for the seniors as they get close to wrapping up their high school golf career. We have a week to practice until we take on the Gallery Golf Club again. We will work on how to pull a club out of the bag and be confident that the ball will stay out of the woods on a tree lined fairway. And of course, we will practice chipping and putting. May 19, 2016 is the Tri District event.
