Friday Harbor finishes up season, Lopez girl golfers move on to Bi-Districts,

Friday Harbor High School Golf Coach Jack Rice sent in this report about the 2017 1A/1B/2B Girls League Championships Golf Tournament hosted by the North Bellingham Golf Club Thursday, May 11, 2017. This year the WIAA decided to combine the 1B/2B schools with the 1A schools. Our student population dropped a few years back so we no longer qualified to compete with the 1A schools.

Today there were 44 girl players and 24 moved forward to the Bi-District competition. The Friday Harbor Team didn’t embarrass themselves and almost made the cut to the next level.

The real story for the day was the tyrannical rain storm that the players had to experience. It was one of the toughest days for golf that I have seen in a long time. Our new rain coats got a real field testing.

Our League was well represented by both Orcas and Lopez. The freshman twins from Orcas, Maia and Zoe Lewis-Shunk, both finished in the top 7 individually. All six players from the Lopez Ladies Team made it to the Bi-District Tournament.

Though we didn’t make it, our little 1B2B Friday Harbor Girls Team had a fine showing on a very wet day.
