Judge Carolyn Jewett performed the wedding ceremony for Peter Waldman and Elitza (Ellie) Batchiyska in San Juan County, WA courthouse.on August 25, 2026
A simple wedding ceremony turned into a warm island welcome for Peter Waldman and Elitza (Ellie) Batchiyska. It could have been a Hallmark movie.
The actor and writer planned to elope to Friday Harbor and exchange vows at the San Juan County Courthouse. Since they knew no one on the island, they posted a note on Facebook seeking two people to be witnesses. Jennifer Coughlin and former U2 pilot James Crossley answered the call.
Little did the couple know that the simple request for two witnesses would result in a dozen people watching them exchange vows in the Courthouse in Friday Harbor followed by a reception hosted by the Friday Harbor Lions and the Rusty Zipper club.

Following the nuptials, everyone headed to the American Legion patio. Jim Carroll had arranged for the use of the patio after the Lions weekly meeting. With help from Kathy, the patio was festooned with flowers, tables were arranged and the red carpet was rolled out. The point person behind the extravaganza was Jennifer Coughlin. She created flyers which were posted through out Friday Harbor informing folks of the upcoming nuptials. A talented cook, she put together a delicious buffet.

It was smiles all around at the reception
Islanders dropped by the reception. Some wandered in after seeing the bright pink sign. After socializing and thanking everyone involved, it was time for the couple to cut the cake.
Asked if the response to their Facebook post was what they expected. Peter and Elitza laughed and said “No”.
