Dr. James will release later today final ordinance to close playgrounds, lodging facilities, campgrounds

San Juan County Board of Health unanimously approved a motion in support of county Medical Director Dr. Frank James issuing an ordinance that closes playgrounds, campgrounds, parks, transient rentals and transient moorage at ports. The draft called for a review date of April 6, 2020. The BOH suggested an end date of April 30 with a review done on April 6, 2020.

Transient rentals would be open to occupancy by essential workers. County Commissioner Rick Hughes asked for clarification whether construction crews including off-island crews since Island Market in Eastsound is in the midst of a construction project.

According  to Deputy Prosecutor Jon  Cain, off-island construction crews working on an essential facility - which grocery stores are -  would be able to come to the islands.  As for the affordable housing project on Orcas Island, Cain said that was a gray area.

The BOH asked Dr. James to ask Washington State Ferries to post information in Anacortes stating no lodging is available in the San Juan Islands.

"We need clarity about the date. There is little value in setting the date closer than a month from now," Dr. James said.

Dr. James, the county medical director, told the BOH that he would have the final ordinance ready later today. He is expected to take the county's suggestion about an ending date of April 30.

In answer to a question, Dr. James said he is exploring an additional order requiring people that come to the islands be required to be in quarantine for 14 days.

EDITOR's NOTE: I have not been able to obtain a copy of the document that was discussed at the meeting. If we do manage to get a copy, I'll add it to this article. Unfortunately covering this meeting was a bit difficult without the document to look at and because the streaming cut out for a portion of the meeting.

We will post the final ordinance as soon as we receive it.
