Update on Face covering order: It's a recommendation until county is in Phase 2, then it's mandatory

Dr. Frank James, San Juan County's Health Officer, is writing an order that will mandate that people wear face coverings. The order goes into effect at midnight tonight, however, it is still being finalized as of 7 p.m. In the meantime, there is an important piece of information. The order will be a recommendation while we are still in Phase 1. Once the county goes into Phase 2, it will be enforceable.

Brendan Cowan, the Emergency Operations Center Public Information Officer, said " will give the community time to prepare, understand, and ask questions about the order, and it will allow Dr. James and others time to fine tune and educate about what implementation and enforcement will look like. Until then, we continue to urge, recommend, strongly persuade, and advise that everyone cover their face when indoors in a public space, or outside when social distancing is impossible."

A date for going into Phase 2 is not known at this time. Dr. James told the county Board of Health at a special meeting this morning that he isn't ready to ask the state to allow San Juan County to skip ahead to Phase 2. The chart shows the areas the county is still working on. When those are done, Dr. James will be more comfortable seeking the waiver.

A bit unclear as to whether you have to wear a mask in businesses only, or also in public.
