82 COVID cases this week in San Juan County

San Juan County Health & Community Services message: COVID-19 case numbers in San Juan County continue to rise, with 82 new cases in the islands so far this week. While Orcas continues to see the largest spike, cases appear to be increasing on San Juan, and a small number of cases have popped up on Lopez as well.

There is no cause for panic or undue anxiety! The new variant is less severe than previous forms of COVID, and there is reason for optimism. That said, the next few weeks are going to be difficult and we do need to be modifying our behavior to account for this spike in cases.

The County is confident we will soon secure a large number of rapid tests that will be distributed broadly to the community. We are also working to increase our supply of more effective KN95 face masks that we will hand out, with priority being those who work in high risk environments.

Those who are unvaccinated, who are vaccinated but have not received their booster, or those who are high risk should still take every precaution to avoid COVID infection. Reports from mainland hospitals are that COVID wards are almost exclusively full of individuals who are not fully vaccinated.

Everyone should be making efforts to be safe and minimize spread in order to slow this spike down and give our hospitals and medical providers a chance to manage the surge. With luck and effort this latest wave will end up really be the beginning of the end of the pandemic, but we have some more work to do before we get there.

Vaccination clinics are being held in January and February.
