Tucked into the middle of the Guard Electric Building on Mullis Street in Friday Harbor is Mirabella Skincare, a warm, relaxing oasis of cutting edge technology and old-fashioned high quality customer care. Owner and aesthetician Mary-Brooke Barger celebrated the 10th anniversary of the business in October 2016.

Barger began her career as a massage therapist in 1987 in Boulder, Colorado, where she specialized in clinical and remedial massage. While working with chronic migraine clients she discovered how powerful facial massage was in not just relieving pain, but in also creating a profound feeling of relaxation.
In 1994 in Alexandria, Virginia she began taking classes in different types of facial massage, including the Belavi method, Indian Face Massage, and Manual Lymph Drainage. In 2005 she returned to school to study esthetics. Her college background in biochemistry served her well in understanding how cosmetic formulas work on the skin, and ever since, skin care has been her passion.
Seeking a calmer, simpler life, Barger and her husband Paul moved to San Juan Island in 2006. The couple had been living in the Washington, D.C. area.
She opened Mirabella Skincare in 2006 specializing in technology-driven customized skin treatments designed to help people achieve their healthiest skin. She keeps up with the latest effective technologies and through the years has added either a new product or a new service each year.
Her two-most popular treatments are microcurrent facial toning and chemical peels.
She said, "The Platinum Lift microcurrent series helps to firm and tone underlying facial muscles for an overall more youthful appearance. I also offer medium depth chemical peels which my clients love because of how they even out skin tone and improve the skin's texture."
Barger limits her clientele to residents of the San Juans. " I prefer to develop long term professional relationships with the clients I serve," she said.
Customer satisfaction is Barger's top priority. At her Open Door Tuesdays, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. , Barger gives complimentary free consultations providing customers with a skincare regimen designed specifically for them. Also on Tuesday mornings, make-up artist and esthetician Laura Allen does consultations and provides makeup tips.
Barger began carrying the Jane Iredale Mineral Makeup line this year.
Allen has years of experience with the line. She prefers it to the numerous other brands she's familiar with because it is skincare-based. Mirabella's website lists several highlights of the product line:
- non-comedogenic - allowing skin to breathe and function normally
- safety tested, allergy tested, clinically tested and dermatologist tested
- pure mineral pigments with no fillers such as talc all natural preservatives,
- no parabens
- cruelty free
Barger has always carried Dermalogica skincare products at Mirabella. She chose the product line because in addition to really delivering results, it is made in the USA, was founded by a woman, and it is researched and developed by the International Dermal Institute. Dermalogica® products are non-comedogenic and contain no occlusive mineral oil or lanolin, and no artificial colors, fragrance, formaldehyde, or S.D. alcohol. The products are made in the U.S.A., are cruelty free, and are packaged in recyclable contamination free containers.
While many clients book frequent facials or other treatments, another option exists for people who don't have the time or budget for the advanced treatments. They can purchase the FDA-approved devices that Mirabella carries and do their own treatments at home. Barger provides full support and training for the NuFACE microcurrent facial trainer and the LightStim LED devices for wrinkles and acne. She recommends taking a "before" photo. Customers say they have been amazed at the difference between their "before" and "after" photos.
