At last: Baseball fields to be built at Linde Community Park this summer

If all goes as planned, construction on baseball fields at Linde Community Park will begin immediately and finish by Halloween 2019. The fields won't be ready for games until Spring 2021 as the grass needs time to get firmly established.

Linde Community Park has soccer fields, and softball fields used by the Friday Harbor High School teams. There are also facilities for community use - playground, trails. The property was purchased in the 1990s by San Juan Island School District for siting a future high school if enrollment continued to grow. The fields were designed to fit around a potential new school.

An anonymous donor has given the funds for the construction of the baseball fields to the San Juan Community Foundation. An oversight committee established by the Foundation will manage the funds and  make sure a precise budget is adhered to.

Once the project is done, Island Rec will take over the maintenance. Island Rec has an arrangement with the school district to maintain Linde Park. They also maintain other community parks including the Skate Park at the fairgrounds and the Gravel Pit park.

San Juan Island School District unanimously approved the memorandum of understanding between the district, the foundation and Island Rec at a special meeting June 3, 2019.

Friday Harbor Wolverines have played baseball for years at Hartman Fields on the corner of Spring and Marguerite. The St. Francis Parish has generously let the team use the property which belongs to the church.  The team and volunteers have maintained the baseball diamond.

John O Linde Community Park was dedicated in September 2017.
