Task force recommends funding options for ferries

The state, over the next decade, faces a $1.3 billion shortfall for Washington State Ferries' operation and capital needs. The Connecting Washington Task Force, a group created by Governor Gregoire to develop sustainable funding for transportation, recommends a $20 billion package of funding options - raising revenue through a a combination of state fees, tolling, taxes and increased local option revenues.

The task force also recommends the state legislature directly increase revenues sufficient to preserve and maintain the current transportation system and put the improvements before the voters in the fall of 2012.

WSF's $1.3 billion need is included in the preservation and maintenance category, according to Washington State Dept. of Transportation (WSDOT) Ferries Division Assistant Secretary David Moseley.

More information about the task force is available on the Governor's website. She will present details of the task force recommendations to the legislature in 2012.
