Sidewalk needed on Front St. for ADA compliance

The ramp on the sidewalk opposite Friday Harbor ferry terminal is too steep for anyone with a non-electric wheelchair to navigate. In order to comply with American with Disability (ADA) standards, a sidewalk will be installed along Front street at street level.

The sidewalk will be at least 6-feet wide. The Spokane design firm in charge of the project recommends a 10-feet width.

The project is in the design phase now according to Washington State Ferries staff.

Non-ferry traffic driving through Front Street will not be allowed during ferry off-loading once the sidewalk is installed. Signage directing pedestrians across the street out of the way of the cars disembarking the ferry will also be erected.

The project design will be presented to the Town Council at a time still to be scheduled.
