Lightning sparked smoldering fire in Land Bank property on San Juan Island

A tree in the Land Bank's Beaverton Marsh Preserve on San Juan Island was hit by lightning during the storm earlier this month. The ensuing ground fire smoldered due to the wet conditions. On September 11, San Juan Island Fire and Rescue Dept personnel were called to the scene. The decision was made to monitor the fire and not extinguish it at this time. It is helping to clear out the underbrush that poses a fire hazard. The Land Bank is likely to monitor it as a fire ecology project. Tree photo by Noel Monin
