Orcas Island man charged with Vehicular Homicide in death of Rachel Gibson

One count of Vehicular Homicide has been filed against a  33-year-old Orcas Island man. Arraignment is set for October 22, 2018.

According to court documents, Rachel Beth Gibson died September 7, 2018 from injuries she suffered in the September 5, 2018 crash. 

According to the court documents, the single-vehicle crash occured on Orcas Road and Nordstrom Lane on Orcas Island before midnight on September 5. The driver was outside the vehicle when the deputy arrived. Gibson was partially pinned under the vehicle. The front passenger door and wheel were completely off the vehicle. 

The court documents state that the driver, "told Deputy Fowler that he had been driving, and that he was in a bad wreck and had "killed (his) best friend". Blood drawn at PeaceHealth Medical Center in Bellingham showed his blood alcohol was 0.141."

In an interview with the deputy on September 10, the driver said he had been drinking at a pub in Eastsound prior to the crash.
