There has been a bit of confusion by some people on Facebook about Proposition No. 2 on the San Juan County General Election ballot. The increase in the levy lid lift is not four times the current amount. Proposition No. 2 asks for a levy lid lift increase from 16 cents to 22 cents per $1,000 of assessed value.
Voters in the San Juan Islands are being asked to approve a levy lid lift of 22 cents. Approval of Proposition No. 2 on the General Election ballot would replace the existing levy lid lift that is expiring. The existing lid lift was approved in 2009 and renewed in 2014. Instead of asking for another six-year renewal, the county is asking for a levy lid lift that won't expire.
The current levy lid lift costs property owners 16 cents per $1,000 of assessed value in 2019. The new one would cost 22 cents per 22 cents per $1,000 of assessed value for 2020. An increase of 6 cents per $1,000 of assessed value.
Under Prop. 2, the TOTAL current expense property tax levy would be 85 cents per 1,000 assessed value in 2020. The TOTAL of 85 cents per $1,000 of assessed value is derived by adding together 22 cents (Prop. 2 voter approved portion) + 63 cents (base levy).
