The moratorium the council  adopted in January and amended in March to be limited to UGA areas, Villages, Hamlets and the Rosario area. Those areas are on Orcas and Lopez Islands. The moratorium was set for six months.  It can be extended if the council votes to do so. The choices are:

Let the moratorium expire.

Extend the moratorium.

Modify and extend the moratorium

Council member Cindy Wolf is adamant that there is a serious problem on Orcas. Among the problems are that the current moratorium doesn't cover an area of the island where a family has purchased numerous homes in what was a regular neighborhood. The homes are now vacations rentals. They wanted to get a permit to build a check-in office which was denied.

Council member Christine Miller of San Juan Island promised to support a moratorium when she was campaigning, but changed her tune after she was elected. She says it is because she learned more about VRs. She voted for the original moratorium after it was cut down to only cover a few land -use classifications.

Council Chair Jamie Stephens of Lopez Island also favored the reduced scope of the present moratorium.
