Want to be a planning commissioner? Town and County have vacancies

September 14, 2022 – Are you interested in volunteering to help guide future development in the Town of Friday Harbor or San Juan County. Conincidentally, both entities have upcoming vacancies on their planning commissions. Applicants must live on San Juan Island, but ironically, the applicant for the Town's Planning Commission must live outside the Town's limits.

Town Planning Commission Vacancy

The Town of Friday Harbor is looking for a volunteer to fill an upcoming vacancy on the Town Planning Commission. This “At-Large” position is reserved for a County resident. (A resident of San Juan Island and a qualified voter of San Juan County not residing in Town limits.)

The five-member Planning Commission meets regularly on Thursday evenings and acts as the fact-finding agency of the Town with respect to growth and development. To that end, the Commission has the continuing duty to review the Town Comprehensive Plan and make recommendations to the Town Council concerning land use matters.

To be considered, mail or email your letter of interest to the Mayor’s office at the Town of Friday Harbor, 60 Second Street, PO Box 219, Friday Harbor, WA or rayj@fridayharbor.org. Visit www.fridayharbor.org for more information or email Ryan Ericson, CDPD Director at ryane@fridayharbor.org.

San Juan County Planning Commission vacancies

San Juan County is looking for San Juan Island residents interested in volunteering to fill two vacancies on the Planning Commission. Both are partial terms.

Position #5 will serve a partial term that ends in December of 2024.

Position #8 will also serve a partial term that will end in December of 2025.

Members need to be residents on San Juan Island and share a strong interest in helping make San Juan County a better place.

The Planning Commission is a group of citizen volunteers appointed by the County Council who make recommendations on planning related matters including the Comprehensive Plan and Development Code. Workshops and public hearings of the Planning Commission are an important public forum where public opinion and advice becomes part of the County’s records and decision-making process.

Meetings are typically held once per month on the third Friday of the month in the morning, but occasionally special meetings may be called to address topics of a specific nature or maintain schedules for large projects.   Regular attendance is important as is a willingness to participate collaboratively with the public and staff. To apply, please send an email to ingridg@sanjuanco.com for a volunteer application.

For questions, please contact David Williams, Director of Community Development at davidw@sanjuanco.com or 360-370-7571.
