Bear Update: Eating garbage on Orcas Island

San Juan County Sheriff's Office is getting a bear trap to catch the black bear that arrived on Orcas Island Saturday, May 27. It is thought the bear swam over from Lummi Island.

Rep. Jeff Morris (D-Anacortes) shared this photo on Instagram of the bear at his place on Orcas Island.

Sheriff Ron Kregs says his office has been in constant contact with the state Dept. of Fish and Wildlife. The goal is to capture the bear and have WDFW relocate him to a more suitable place in the Cascade Mountains.

For the time being, the bear seems to be getting into garbage cans and sheds. The public is asked to please try to keep garbage locked up. Do not try to feed him. Please continue to call the Sheriff's Office business line at 378-4151 with information about any sightings. The information helps to track him.
