Crash knocks out power; driver arrested for DUI

A single-vehicle crash knocked out power on the north west side of San Juan Island shortly after 5 p.m. Saturday, October 7, 2017. Deputy Zac Reimer said it appears the driver lost control, hit and destroyed an OPALCO electrical box. The truck was headed north on West Valley Road and left the roadway by the intersection with Yacht Haven. The injured driver was taken by ambulance to Peace Island Medical Center's Emergency Department.

The driver was arrested for DUI and investigation is ongoing.

OPALCO crew arrived on scene before 6 p.m.

No estimate on when power will be restored. (UPDATE: The power was restored by midnight).

    I have always
wondered why electrical boxes so close to the roadways are not shielded by a guard rail???????????

    Might be $$$$ well spent!
