Island-touring bear caught in Mount Vernon, will be released in the North Cascades

Mount Vernon Police Department responded to a report of a black bear on East College Way at 4 a.m. Saturday, June 1. Due to its markings, it is believed to be the same bear that spent part of April and the month of May swimming from Camano Island to Whidbey Island to Fidalgo Island to Orcas Island to San Juan Island to Lopez Island to Decatur Island and to Blakely Island.

Washington State Fish and Wildlife officers tranquilized the bear which had moved to a tree on North 17th Street and caught it in a trap. Mount Vernon officers assisted.
