According to San Juan County Sheriff Ron Krebs, there have been attempted scams of a very specific nature in the county.
In the first, the caller calls and states they are your grandson. They then explain how they are in the hospital or jail or some other predicament, and need money to get out. They do not want you to tell mom or dad about it, because "You know how they are". They then ask you to put money on a pre-paid gift card and send them the number.
The second, they call and tell you they are Sgt. or Deputy (insert name) from the Sheriff's Office and that you have a warrant that needs to be paid or you will be arrested. In this one, they are using a name of one of the local deputies.
The Sheriff's Office will NEVER EVER call you and ask for money over the phone. Always verify who you are talking to on the other end, they may not be who you think they are.
