Lopez Island Deputies Merrifield and Fowler climb 69 flights of stairs in Seattle fundraiser

San Juan County Sheriff Deputies Sam Fowler and Justin Merrifield are also volunteer firefighters at Lopez Island Fire and EMS. On March 10, 2024, both participated in a fundraiser and climbed 69 flights of the tallest building in Seattle while in full firefighting gear.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) Firefighter Stair climb event is the world's largest on-air stair climb competition and annual fundraiser. All 2,000 participants were in full gear, weighing over 60 lbs while making the climb. The 69 flights of stairs total 1,356 steps, and 788 feet of vertical elevation gain.
