The lights are on in Friday Harbor

The weather cooperated and cleared up before the start of the Island Lights Festival in Friday Harbor. Hundreds of islanders and visitors gathered on Spring Street Saturday, December 1 to watch the  tree lighting. Festivities began earlier with treats and crafts at The Whale Museum.

Next was caroling at Memorial Park led by Friday Harbor Elementary School Choir. Riptide Cafe served up hot chocolate. San Juan Island Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Becki Day started the countdown and Santa threw the switch which lit the thousands of lights on the two elms.

The fun moved to Brickworks, where Santa  listened to children's wishes, Island Rec folks helped kids with crafts and San Juan Islands Agricultural Guild sold local harvest vegetable soup, mac and cheese and bread along with spiced, local apple cider. And a silent auction for several traditional and island-style gingerbread houses wrapped up the night.
