Fair 'Expo' earns a prestigious Black & White Ribbon from state

Another successful San Juan County Fair wrapped up Saturday night after four full days of exhibitions and friendly competition. The Main Building which was filled with exhibits ranging from photography to baking to arts and crafts was awarded a Black & White Ribbon by the judge from the state Fair Board.  We'll have a full story about the fair and lots of  photos  posted by Monday morning.

Balmer and Knapp, first man and woman across Island Loop finish line

Paul Balmer was the first person across the finish line at Island Rec's 42nd Annual Island Loop 8K on Saturday, August 17, 2019 with a time of 31:30. Monica Knapp of Sammamish was the first woman across the finish line with a time of 36:49. In second place among the women was Tessa Nichols 39:24 followed by Tiffany Sivco 42:15. We don't have all the men's results yet and will post them when we do. 

Island Haven to the (turtle) rescue

Did your child win a turtle at the San Juan County Fair and now can't take care of it? Island Haven on San Juan Island is willing to facilitate the rehoming of the turtles. They have community members with turtle experience ready to take them, and they can as well if necessary. Welcome back John Fyrqvist, Island Rec's new Recreation Specialist

John Fyrqvist is the new Recreation Specialist at Island Rec on San Juan Island. Fyrqvist will primarily be organizing youth, teen, and family programs and events. After growing up on San Juan Island, Fyrqvist spent a decade in the Midwest where he graduated from the University of Notre Dame. He is thrilled to be returning to the island after teaching middle school in South Bend, IN for the past three years.
