Are you missing your morning fitness class routine? Try a safe, heart healthy exercise class to energize your active lifestyle from the comfort of your own home with Jacquelyn Reiff. This class will use easy to follow low-impact movements, increase core and muscular strength, while working on balance and stretching to enhance your daily living. A chair can be used for standing support and exercises can be modified depending on fitness level.
A fully paved one-mile long loop trail is now open at John O. Linde Community Park in Friday Harbor. Island Rec says the final phase of the trail was completed this last fall in conjunction with the baseball field construction through the generous support of a private donor. If you have any questions about the trail or park please feel free to call the Island Rec office at 360-378-4953, or drop by the office at 580 Guard St. Monday – Friday 11am – 5pm.
Island Rec is offering a series of off-island trips for teens. First up is the YMCA Climbing Wall in Bellingham on February 17, 2020. First timers and seasoned climbers are welcome to join us as we head up to the Whatcom Family YMCA in Bellingham to take on the tallest indoor climbing wall in the Pacific Northwest. The early registration deadline is February 6 for $63. Price goes up by $10 after February 6.
Island Rec is offering a LEGO Camp during Mid-Winter Break February 18-21 in Friday Harbor. The Force Awakens in this introductory engineering course for young Jedi. Explore engineering principles as we construct the Ewok Village on Endor, fly through space on our X-Wings, and defend the Echo Base on Hoth. Create motorized and architectural projects with imagination and engineering to defeat the Empire.
An instructor from Seattle’s Play-Well TEKnologies will be here to organize this one-of-a-kind camp.
Participants ages 5-7 will partake in Jedi Engineering with Lego Materials camp that runs from 9 am to 12 noon
Participants ages 7-12 will be taking the Jedi Master Engineering with LEGO from 1 to 4 p.m.
Both camps will be held in the Friday Harbor High School STEM Building, February 18-21, 2020.
Register by February 6 for $138. The cost is $148 for registration after Feb. 6.

Island Rec is offering another installment of Futsal. Join Coach Randy Martin for skills work and games in this fast paced, dynamic indoor soccer game. Sessions are held Saturday afternoons at the Fair Building in Friday Harbor from February 1 to 29 for ages 8-18.
Island Rec's Resolution Run 5K took place January 1, 2020 in Friday Harbor. FIfty-four hardy souls registered, the largest number so far. A few brave participants jumped into the waters for Island Rec's Salish Splash at Jackson's Beach, then warmed up by the bonfire.

This December, FANS’ (Families and Neighbors Support Island Rec) generous donors helped the group contribute $6,000 to Island Rec, for a 2019 total of $12,000. These funds provide much needed support for Island Rec programs, parks and events, including Music on the Lawn, swimming lessons and vital scholarships to provide assistance for families, just to name a few.
