It was a Starry, Starry Night at the 28th Annual Children's Festival at the San Juan County Fairgrounds May 5, 2018. Children flocked to this free event and created crafts, balloon animals, jumped in the bouncy castle, climbed aboard a fire engine, listened to the Argyle Street Jazz Band and lined up to see the Flight Museum's traveling planetarium.
Tasha Calverley took home the first-place prize in the photo contest for the 2018 Children's Festival sponsored by Island Rec. The theme for the free festival that takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 5 at the San Juan County Fairgrounds in Friday Harbor is Starry, Starry Night.
Island Rec needs your help to design the poster for this year’s Children’s Festival. Kids of all ages are invited to submit poster designs that incorporate this year’s festival theme: Artworks must be submitted on an official entry form which can be obtained at Island Rec’s office or at the Elementary School.
Island Rec's 3rd Annual Resolution Run 5k kicks off at 10 am Sunday, January 1, 2018. This is a family and dog friendly fun run, from Jackson Beach to Mullis, into town, up Argyle and back to Jacksons Beach.
At 11 am, is your chance to start your year off with an icy dip into the Salish Sea by participating in the 2nd Annual Salish Splash. There will be fires and light snacks.

It is time to register for Island Rec’s Girl’s Basketball League, open to all girls in grades 3 through 8. The focus of this league is development and improvement of individual and team skills. Previous basketball experience is not required.
Registration is now open for Futsal Youth & Teen Indoor Soccer. Island Rec is offering youth and teen indoor Futsal to kick off the new year.
Coach Van will be on site to support the kids, with skills and drill the first 15 mins and playing small sided games for the rest. This fast paced game is designed to give the kids more touches on the ball and work in smaller teams. Wednesdays, January 10- February 28.
Looking for a new lunch time routine? Step into a weekly serious of one-hour walks throughout Friday Harbor. This free drop-in program sponsored by PeaceHealth Peace Island Medical Center, takes place from 12 noon to 1 p.m. on six Wednesdays, October 4 – November 8.
Participants will receive a free Step into Health shirt while supplies last, and will be entered into a weekly prize drawing. Come walk with Island Rec staff and Trails volunteers.
Island Rec's Zumba Gold class for ages 55+ is for active older adults who are looking for a modified Zumba class that recreates the original moves of Zumba at a lower intensity. The design of the class introduces easy to follow Zumba choreography that focuses on balance, range of motion, and coordination.
Island Rec is offering another session of Adult Tennis Lessons this September/October with Caroline Hansen. Classes are held Sundays; September 10 – October 22, with no class Sept 24. Adult lesson for ages 16 and up are from 2 to 3:15 pm at the High School Tennis Courts.
FANS (Families and Neighbors Support Island Rec) gave Island Rec $5,000 for summer programs. The funds were donated by individuals and businesses on San Juan Island to (FANS). The gift will again provide financial support to popular programs like Music on the Lawn, Movies in the Park, swimming lessons, Eddie and Friends dog park, and San Juan Island Trails.
Island Rec's 2017 Music on the Lawn Summer Concert Series kicks off July 5 with the Army Brass Band and the Army Rock Band Patriots.
This long-standing concert series is on Wednesday nights from 6:30-8:15, located at the San Juan Historical Museum, which is at 405 Price Street. It is a perfect time to grab a blanket or bring a chair and have a picnic. Get ready to get up and dance as well as this year we have an exceptionally dancer friendly groups of musicians lined up.
July 5 – Army Brass Band and the Army Rock Band Patriots – this will be a battle of the bands where each group will be taking turns trying to outdo the other. This will be a very fun and lively show for all ages.
July 12 – Tapwater – this very popular band hails from Portland and is a boisterous sextet with lots of vocals, drums, piano, saxophones, guitars and as much as the ferries will allow them to bring on board. This is a very danceable and strangely exotic band playing roots music.
July 19 – Blues on Tap – this award-winning blues band from Seattle knows how to work their craft, and have visited the island many times to a very appreciative audience.
July 26 – Uncle Funk and the Dope 6 – This upbeat Funk & Rock band is from Port Townsend and will jumpstart the deadest of batteries. Imagine Stevie Wonder, Little Feat, Prince, Elton John and whatever fun band you’ve heard and mash them up.
August 2 – Jbots – this local rock band is as good as they come and impresses all audiences. Pop Rock & Roll at its best.
August 9 - Uncle Otto – this dynamic local acoustic band with svelte harmonies sings the hits of the 70’s. Think, CSN&Y, The Band, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Dan Hicks, mixed with some reggae all rolled into one very big play list.
Tour de Family, a free bike ride on Shaw Island, will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 24, 2017. Island Rec and San Juan Island Trails Committee are sponsoring this event which provides the choice of a guided or non-guided ride to points of interest on Shaw Island.
