Camping at Cypress Island, the largest relatively undeveloped island in the San Juan Islands, is now available year-round. The state Department of Natural Resources restricted the camping season to Memorial Day to Labor Day several years ago due to budget restrictions.
DNR staff says the decision is based not on a change in funding, but rather in response to user interest in a longer camping season on Cypress Island.
Dozens of children flocked to the county Fairgrounds May 2, 2015 for Island Rec's 25th Annual Children's Festival. They saw Rainbow of Hawaii dancers and musicians; watched the Ballet Folklorico dance the hula to a song from Lilo and Stitch, made seashell necklaces, bowled with coconuts and participated in many more activities.
Sally Thomsen is resigning effective June 5, 2015 after 15 years as the director of Island Rec. While acknowledging that the decision was very difficult, she says she is delighted and excited to join her husband, Tim Thomsen, in the operation of San Juan Kayak Expeditions. Thomsen has run his kayak touring business for the past 35 years.
Approximately $485,000 is available through San Juan County's Lodging Tax Facilities Grant Program for events, facility improvement or operation projects, or other projects in line with the county's Tourism Master Plan.
In the making for months, San Juan Island CrossFit will open early January, 2015. The program will be housed in San Juan Island Fitness and will be open to members and non-members of the Club.
San Juan Transit will operate the Winter Ride / Mt Baker Ski Bus Program once offered by the San Juan Island school district. Seats not reserved by students are available to the general public. Cost is $35 and includes a passenger ferry ticket, The bus runs on Saturdays from January 10 through February 28, 2015

Island Rec's ever popular monthly Cosmic Skate Night is back.
Family Open Skate night takes place every Saturday from November through April at the Fairgrounds. Cosmic Skate Night - think darkened room with disco lights and music from the 70s and 80s - happens on the first Saturday of each month.
