San Juan County Public Hospital District #1 Board of Commissioners will hold a special meeting at 1 p.m. Tuesday, February 5 in the Frank Wilson Memorial EMS Building 1079 Spring Street in Friday Harbor. The purpose of the meeting is to finalize the interim EMS Chief contract. The board selected Karl Kuetzing as interim chief in January. Chief Jerry Martin handed in his resignation effective April 1, 2019.

San Juan County’s 2019 Point in Time Homeless Count will be conducted on Thursday, January 24, 2019. Count organizers and volunteers work with local family resource centers, food banks, emergency cold weather shelters, churches, healthcare providers, senior centers, libraries, the sheriff’s office, and many other community support service providers to conduct the count. The count, initiated by the State of Washington in 2005 (RCW43.185C.030), is conducted annually at the end of January.
A complaint regarding the San Juan Island Emergency Medical Services Chief Jerry Martin's training documentation has been filed with the state Department of Health. Instead of telling Martin to produce the documentation, three San Juan County Public Hospital District #1 commissioners - Dr. Michael Edwards, Dr. Mark Schwinge and Rebecca Smith - voted to have taxpayers pay the cost of an attorney to defend Martin in the investigation.
In an unanimous vote, the San Juan County Public Hospital District #1 Board of Commissioners chose Karl Kuetzing to be the interim EMS Chief. The current chief, Jerry Martin, has not announced his resignation but is expected to retire sometime in 2019. Martin will receive a severance of six months salary when he leaves.
Gov. Jay Inslee announced on January 8, 2019 that he and Democratic lawmakers will introduce legislation that would provide a public health care option in Washington through the state’s Health Benefit Exchange. Inslee was joined by Sen. David Frockt, Rep. Eileen Cody, Insurance Commissioner Mike Kreidler and King County Executive Dow Constantine. He made the announcement at King County Public Health Center in Seattle, saying Washington has always been a leader in health care.
