Three Friday Harbor women are traveling to Kenya this October. While there, they will bring donations of clothing to a youth center in the poorest area of Nairobi. Francie Hansen, Debbie Dardanelli and Susan Waters are going to participate in an Elephant and Sustainable Agriculture research project in southern Kenya. However, on the way, they will stop off in Nairobi to visit the Great Hope Resource and Youth Center in the Korogocho Slums. Francie has corresponded with the mother/daughter team who run the center and supported their work for some time. The Friday Harbor trio decided to bring needed items to the center while in Kenya.
Anne Waweru helped to start the center in 2001 with an aim of supporting HIV and AIDS affected and infected orphans. Great Hope has an orphanage and school. The center currently houses 86 children, between the ages of 2 – 17. There are 14 secondary students, 12 children are in baby care, 29 are in lower classes and 31 are in upper primary school. Great Hope Center is run purely by donations. Activities at the Great Hope Center are run by volunteer teachers, babysitters, social workers and cooks.
One of the main challenges is feeding the children. Anne says, “Maintaining 2 to 3 meal's per day is an issue, so in most cases we serve breakfast and one other meal at 2pm or 3pm to stand in for lunch and supper. We spend an average of 750 USD to 1000 USD on food in a monthly basis.”
Another challenge is clothing and bedding for so many children in need. Francie, Debbie and Susan are organizing a clothing drive to help support Great Hope Center children. They are requesting donations of clean, new or gently used children’s and teen’s clothes and shoes. Pants, shorts, T-shirts, shirts, light jackets, socks, shoes are needed. All donations are gratefully accepted.
Debbie and Susan are agents at Windermere Real Estate / San Juan Island, and are delighted to have Windermere RE/SJI support the project as the drop off point for donations. Francie, Debbie and Susan will deliver the donations to the Great Hope Center in the Korogocho Slums, Nairobi, Kenya on October 30, 2018.
Donations may be dropped off at the Windermere Real Estate Office, 50 Spring St., Friday Harbor, between the hours of 9:00 am – 5:00 pm. Donations will be accepted between September 25 and October 15, 2018.
