Are you a new farmer seeking advice on your operation? Are you a seasoned farmer interested in sharing your experience? If you answered yes to either of these questions, then the Farmer to Farmer Mentor Program, hosted by WSU San Juan County Extension may be for you.
What is the Farmer to Farmer Mentorship Program?
This program facilitates connections between experienced mentor farmers with beginning (less than 10 years experience) mentee farmers interested learning about agriculture in San Juan County. Farmers interested in this program will be connected to experienced farmers (as available) or may apply with an existing mentor to learn one-on-one about the specifics of a particular type of farming or an agreed-upon set of skills or concepts.
Applications Due: April 30
Application Review – on-going
Interview – May 6-17
Applicants Notified - May 20
How to Apply- All mentees and mentors fill out an application and have an interview. To facilitate matching we encourage mentees to seek out and apply with mentors. New connections will be proposed based on both mentee and mentor mutual interests, skills, geography and availability.
What to Expect- Mentors and mentees will agree to a minimum of four meetings to work on one to two specifically identified production goals or skills during the 2019 growing season. Meetings may be in-person, by phone or email and/or visits to each other’s farms. Mentors will be offered an honorarium as a thank you for sharing their knowledge. WSU will support mentors and mentees by checking in monthly to encourage interaction, however success of the program is dependent on mentors and mentees actively engaging with one another.
