State Recruiting Members to Serve on the Recreation and Conservation Funding Board

OLYMPIA–The Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office is recruiting for two new members for its Recreation and Conservation Funding Board, which awards grants to improve parks, trails, boating amenities and access to shorelines. It also awards grants to conserve working lands, such as farms and forests, and to protect pristine wildlife and natural areas.

Lawsuit calls for ‘Whale Protection Zone’ as more Southern Residents orca die

PRESS RELEASE: SEATTLE— Conservation groups sued the Trump administration today Monday, August 19, 2019 for ignoring a legal petition to protect critically endangered Southern Resident killer whales in the heart of their Salish Sea habitat. Today’s lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court in Washington by the Center for Biological Diversity and Orca Citizens Relief Alliance (ORCA), follows news that three more of these starving orcas are presumed dead, dropping their population to just 73.

County Council discusses Annual Docket, land capacity analysis and more August 19 and 20

San Juan County Council meets on Monday and Tuesday, August 19 and 20 in the Legislative building at 55 Second Street in Friday Harbor. The items to be discussed include the Annual Docket of proposed changes to the county code and Comprehensive Plan, the draft Economic Development Element, the Land Capacity Analysis, Employee Housing, and more.

Scammers are targeting physicians

The Washington Medical Commission (WMC) has been alerted that scam artists are calling clinics and offices posing as the Medical Board, saying there is a problem with a physician’s DEA registration or alleging they violated a federal law. They are providing our number as theirs and sending letters with WMC letterhead. A letter sample can be viewed here.

6 paddleboard fatalities in 29 years; 4 in the past 30 days

The Washington State Parks Boating Program is urging stand up paddleboarders to be safe on the water by always wearing a life jacket and leash.

According to Washington state recreational boating accident data, six stand up paddleboard fatalities have occurred in the last 29 years — four of those have been in the last 30 days. One was on Mountain Lake in Moran State Park on Orcas Island.

San Juan Islands Sheriff's Log: July 31-August 7: Man drowns, dog kills cat, car crashes, speeding...

Deputies in the San Juan Islands responded to 252 calls from July 31 to August 7, 2019 including: A Lopez Island deputy assisted Land Bank personnel in clearing an abandoned derelict campsite from Land Bank property. No specific person was associated with this campsite. A Deputy on Orcas Island responded to a report of a dog having killed a cat. The person in charge of the dog at the time of the incident was charged with allowing it to kill a domestic animal.
