Herb Cunniff of Friday Harbor died on July 6, 2018 in Anacortes, WA. Herb had been at Rosario Assisted living since August of 2016 where the caregivers were indulgent and caring.
Loving father to Cathy (Karla Worthen), Pat (Tricia), Tim (Keith Kresge), and, grandfather to Sean Cunniff and Colleen Green (Zack). Also survived by brother Dan (Judy), and sister-in-law Margaret Garrod.
Herb was born on May 13, 1927 in Chicago, IL to Herbert John Cunniff and Marie Cunniff. Herb met his future wife, Lois while attending Proviso High School in Chicago. They were both 16 at the time and were married at 21. The marriage lasted for 67 years, until Lois’ death in 2016. The 13th of November, 2018 would have been their 70th Wedding Anniversary.
Herb served in both WWII and in Korea. He was affiliated with the Army Radio Corps providing radio service to the troops. Herb returned to Chicago after his military service and joined WABC in Chicago where he worked for 20 years in live television as Stage Manager, Associate Director, then Director involved in kids shows, music shows, and commercials.
In 1967 Herb and Lois headed West from Chicago arriving in Los Angeles (Woodland Hills) in January 1968. Herb joined NBC Burbank in 1968 and worked another 30 years as a Director and Head of Operations Control. He also directed other prestigious programming including a special starring Julie Andrews and Harry Belafonte. Herb remained a member of the Directors Guild throughout his retirement years.
During a summer vacation in the Pacific Northwest the family visited San Juan Island. When time came to think about retiring, the San Juan Islands provided a place of beauty and easy living Herb and Lois enjoyed for many years. They built their home in Smuggler’s Cove in the mid-80s and moved full-time in 1990.
While living in Friday Harbor Herb and Lois volunteered with the San Juan Island Community Theater. Herb’s life-long interest in model trains was encouraged and broadened with the N-gauge train club.
Referring to Herb, Lois once said, “Once a Director, Always a Director.” His direction and love are truly missed.
A memorial mass will be held Saturday, November 10th 11:00 AM at St. Francis Catholic Church in Friday Harbor.
