Catherine “Cathy” (Smith) Godwin October 7, 1930 - May 13, 2024

Catherine “Cathy” (Smith) Godwin passed away on May 13, 2024, after a long and amazing life. She was born on October 7, 1930, in Litchfield, Minnesota and moved to Eugene with three of her four siblings when she was 5-years-old. The 4th sibling was born in Eugene.

She graduated from University High School in 1948 and married Raymond Foster, Jr. in 1949 (she made her own wedding dress) and had seven children, Jennifer Foster Nardulli (Joseph Nardulli) of Laguna Niguel, CA; Bruce Allen Foster (deceased), Gary Raymond Foster (deceased), Nancy Foster Fusare (Eric Fusare) of Friday Harbor, WA; David James Foster of Hemet, CA; John Richard Foster (Vangie Foster) of Las Vegas, NV and Mark Gerald Foster of Dana Point, CA.

At the time of her death she had 15 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and Three great-great-grandchildren, too many to list but granddaughter Jessica Chaffee and her two daughters Sienna Bartlett and Capri Bartlett live in Friday Harbor and were able to visit her frequently.

She married Leonard Godwin in 1979 and lived with him in Southern California then moved back to Eugene, Oregon in 1988 to be near her own mother, where Leonard died in 1994, just a few months before her mother, who passed in 1995 at the age of 85. After Leonard’s death she said she’d “never get married again”, but then at the age of 77 in 2007 she met and married Larry Legris in Las Vegas with most of the family present and then moved back to Laguna Woods, CA and had a happy marriage with him until his death in 2015.

Cathy lived in Laguna Woods with Jennifer and Mark nearby until 2019, when she moved to Friday Harbor to be near Nancy and her family. She first lived at the Village at the Harbor for a year and a half, then with Nancy and her husband Eric in their home, where her granddaughter Jessica Chaffee was her primary caregiver while Nancy worked. In February of 2023 Cathy moved back to the Village to live out her final days. The family was lucky to have the assistance of Hospice of the Northwest, Hospice of San Juan and all the wonderful staff at the Village at the Harbor.

A Celebration of Life was held at the Village at the Harbor on Wednesday, May 29, 2024 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
