This week gives us a chance to recover lost ground from last week, largely due to Venus’ position in Pisces and her lovely alignment to Saturn the Architect. Self-esteem is a real bone of contention in our society these days; I hear many Boomers and Gen X folks complaining that the younger set is all confidence and no substance. What is self-esteem, anyway? Venus in the flexible sign of Pisces allows us to expand our perspective on this and probe more deeply inside of ourselves.
The strict definition of confidence is (paraphrased): Belief in being able to rely on someone (“I have confidence in them”), the ability to feel certain about the truth of something (“I have confidence that climate change is a real occurrence”), the appreciation of one’s own abilities to accomplish something (“The Olympic skater has confidence in her ability to execute a triple axel”). Are confidence and self-esteem the same thing? No. Self-esteem is a core attribute where confidence is more surface. Confidence is based on the ability to do something, self-esteem is the ability to be something.
Since this is the week of Love and many will celebrate or at least acknowledge Valentine’s Day, the element of love must be taken into consideration when it comes to self-esteem. Can we have good self-esteem without love? In the strictest sense, probably not. Love goes hand in hand with compassion, discipline, care, boundaries and mutual happiness in each other’s existence. Without these elements early in life it’s difficult to attain self-esteem even if confidence is present. Confidence can go astray when self-esteem is flawed.
Venus in Pisces encourages us to dig deep and find that self-esteem, evaluate whether or not our confidence is warranted and spur us to do better, be better. Sometimes changing the outside of us builds our self-esteem and sometimes we have to examine the inside. Self-esteem is truly that; if we rely on others for our self-esteem and are continually let down, our thinking is flawed and we need to change course. If we are valued by others, our self-esteem thrives but what happens if that value changes? Sometimes we have to rely on ourselves for our esteem (hence, self-esteem). While this is a good exercise in gauging the barometer of how we really feel about ourselves, it isn’t healthy to have to carry our own esteem in isolation. Self-esteem and confidence are interrelated and not mutually exclusive. They are different but go together. Self-esteem dictates what we undertake to learn and confidence is built through practice and discipline, leading to achievement.
If you want to see how you do self-esteem (Venus) and confidence (Mars), look at where the two planets are in your own birth chart. This will give you clues as to how to enhance or correct your course. It’s important since we each want to be able to be authentic and more than someone whose life is governed by reactions to others.
Mercury moving into Pisces on Sunday will help us more fully grasp these concepts and tweak ourselves if need be.
On Thursday we have a New Moon in Aquarius, completing the cycle undertaken six months ago when the Sun eclipsed. This is a major New Moon, and it will urge us to complete what’s fallen by the wayside due to other life stuff getting in the way. I hope all of you have a good Day of Love on Wednesday, whether or not you have a sweetheart/spouse. Since Valentine’s Day is so firmly fixed in our culture (and store shelves and ads), let’s ratchet up our way of loving and not make it dependent on performance. No harm in throwing some extra love around and it doesn’t have to be commercial or under pressure.
As always, take good care of yourselves and look after each other. Gentler times are here so let’s bask in it and let it fortify us for future challenges.
Aries (March 21- April 19): Yet another silly week, some of it a continuation from last week. Your focus is locked onto making your case, standing up for yourself and forging on in spite of any obstacles. With Venus in your sector of Endings/New Beginnings and Mercury joining her there at the end of the week, you’re reviewing circumstances and trying to figure out how where you were led to where you are now. This is a good week to do that since it’s the week of Love and you’ll want to include your sweetheart or best friend in that hindsight. Valentine’s Day itself has your Ruler Mars pulling you to get outta Dodge and celebrate the day in style! It’s a great week to focus on others in general since attentiveness goes way farther than isolation.
Taurus (April 20 – May 20): With your Ruler Venus in your sector of Friends/Goals and Mercury joining her at the end of the week, you’re in the mood for some meaningful socializing and some conversation that runs deep. You’re at a turning point now and Jupiter is still holding court in your sector of Relationships; this is still a mixed blessing but it’s going to ease up after this week. Valentine’s Day sees you casting about for something different for your sweetheart; you’re after something richer than a card and chocolates! Be flexible, be creative, be patient and you’ll hit the bull’s eye on the day. The weekend looks great for gathering up your favorite people around you.
Gemini (May 21- June 20): This week untangles some of the messes you encountered last week, but not all of them! You may even have a couple of new things to tackle due to Venus in your sector of Career/Ultimate Potential and your Ruler Mercury joining her later in the week. In order to go up you’ll have to go deep and that means examining your own motives and paying attention to your expectations. Are they misplaced? Are you meeting the same situation over and over again? What are you really looking for? That kind of stuff drives you crazy because you tend to either get impatient or over analyze stuff. Keep it simple this week and have a sweet Valentine’s Day with your sweetheart or bestie. You’ll be busy so a midweek celebration will be welcome!
Cancer (June 21 – July 22): Venus in your sector of Travel/New Horizons is in a lovely alignment with Saturn in your sector of Relationships. Mercury will join her later in the week and this will add a spark of depth in your interactions with your closest people. This will be your saving grace in yet another week of frustrating circumstances. This is the residual of the messes of last week and if you have a handle on it, you’ll come out on top of it. Your focus on caring/being cared for helps because your compassion is heightened now and when you get stuck, giving someone else a leg up lightens your mood and often brings you solutions.
Leo (July 23 – August 22): This week may be more emotional than you care for, but it’s the week of love and the celebration of love. Your noble character may prompt you to measure others according to your standards but there is a time and a place for that, so be careful not to step on any toes. Venus and later Mercury now occupy your sector of Shared Assets and they will be turning your attention to matters involving real estate, investments or other such assets you share with someone else. It appears that building or some kind of strategy will be negotiated with an eye on expansion. Wednesday’s Day of Love looks good for you in terms of warm feelings and a sense of security and real partnership.
Virgo (August 23 – September 21): Venus now occupies your sector of Relationships and Mercury will join her later this week. This deepens your feelings toward your loved ones and encourages gentle communication and good feelings. Venus is in a lovely angle to Saturn in your sector of Creative Expression so you may be turning your thoughts toward ways of expressing your love in an unusual manner on the Day of Love. While there will still be some residual messiness from last week’s planetary strife, this week sees you renewed and able to tackle anything that comes your way. You will also have the support of others, which always helps.
Libra (September 22 – October 23): This is the week of Love and your sign is all about The Other, so you’re in your element! Your Ruler Venus now occupies your sector of Health/Purpose and Mercury will join her later this week. The pair is nicely aligned with Saturn in your sector of Home and this brings a sense of ruling your roost with a different attitude. You will be more flexible and open to different perspectives. On the Day of Love itself, you are one of the reigning champions of celebrating with your sense of balance and harmony; your efforts will be well received.
Scorpio (October 24 – November 22): The Week of Love finds you in fine shape due to Venus occupying your sector of Creative Expression; Mercury will join her later in the week and this will set you up for success in terms of self-worth and communication. Both planets will be nicely aligned with Saturn in your sector of Thinking/Communication so your thinking and speech will be structured and solid with a rare flow that opens you up to others. After having gotten through the angst of last week, this week sees you putting things back in order and getting on with it. You have compatible elements of earth and water helping you get unstuck so take advantage of it and enjoy the Day of Love in a manner that gives you pleasure.
Sagittarius (November 23 – December 20): Venus now occupies your sector of Home and Mercury will move in later in the week. Both will be well aligned with Saturn in your financial sector and this will encourage a flow of ideas regarding your living situation. You’ll be able to get around challenges by flowing with them rather than shooting them with arrows in a fit of resistance. The Day of Love will see you in a state of gratitude for not only your sweetheart but all who love you, expanding your sense of well-being. You don’t like doing things alone and are absolutely miserable if your life is filled with nothing but tasks to be completed and no fun. This week opens up the Fun Door to lighten your mood. Mars in your sign will energize you and help you balance work and play.
Capricorn (December 21 – January 20): Venus in your sector of Thinking/Communication will be joined by Mercury later this week and both are in a lovely alignment to your Ruler Saturn in your sign. This sets you up for a warm Day of Love and good feelings about not only your most significant relationship but all of your relationships in general. You can be cold and distant but not this week! Fiery Mars in your sector of Endings/New Beginnings touches and renews your sense of purpose and jogs your memory of something you have wanted to do in the past; now you’ll be able to move forward with that. All in all this week will be good for you to make strides and gain momentum.
Aquarius (January 21 - February 20): Venus now occupies your sector of Finances/Resources and Mercury will join her later this week so you’re set to see some lost resources flow back into the coffers. Both planets are well aligned with Saturn in your sector of Endings/New Beginnings and this means you’re able to come up with a strategy to gain lost ground. The Day of Love sees you longing for a break from responsibility and mundane tasks, so grab your sweetie and do something outrageous (and legal)! The New Moon in your sign on Thursday erases your doubts about a matter of the heart due to a breakthrough. All in all, your week looks good even with the bumps in the road.
Pisces (February 21 – March 20): The Week of Love sees you on a good foot (or fin) due to esteem-building Venus in your sign with Mercury joining her later this week. Since these two will be beautifully aligned with Saturn in your sector of Friends/Goals so it will be a great time to spend with others that can point you in the right direction of a new project or thought process. The New Moon in your sector of Endings/New Beginnings on Thursday will kick off the need to turn over a new leaf as we look forward to Spring and new growth. As the week progresses you’ll see some real forward movement and a sense of well-being so get your good clothes and dancing shoes on!
