I’m as amazed as everyone else about how much things have changed, and how quickly. This reminds me so much of a book I read by the late, celebrated South African writer Doris Lessing, called Shikasta. I suggest you read it, just because it so closely parallels what’s been happening in our world in the past decade or so but accelerating recently. Those of you that see the symbolic side of things will get it. It’s a fascinating read.
This week we still have a Grand Trine in water signs going on and as an astrologer I’ve had to take a good hard look at Grand Trines in general, over time. It used to be that a Grand Trine was a happy alignment, one that makes things easier and promotes success. I’ve noticed that when Grand Trines form now, something awful happens. This Grand Trine was in place when the package bombs happened and the synagogue massacre that just happened. As we near the midterm elections, I’m with you in being concerned that there will be more to come. The good thing about a Grand Trine is that it makes a difficult task easier to accomplish, a burden easier to bear and a goal easier to achieve. This is also the dark side of a Grand Trine because it works equally for good or for harm. The stars are impartial and it’s up to us to make the frequencies they emanate what we will. Trines are harmony. Squares are discord. Oppositions are exactly that, a polarity. Conjunctions are amplification.
This week we have the end of summer celebration in the form of Halloween/Samhain, immediately followed by the Celtic New Year and the Mexican Day of the Dead. This is a good time to pray if you are of that bent, to ask the ancestors for help, to unburden ourselves of the year’s accumulated stresses and share them with our guides/angels/ancestors on the Other Side (if you don’t bend this way, that’s fine too). Gatherings in this potent time of the year are said to contain extra power, so hopefully those of us celebrating will keep that in mind and ask our company to engage in curative thoughts for our troubled world.
Mercury will move into Sagittarius this week, so there will be a smattering of fun and laughter and goofiness about. More friendliness will be extended during this next three weeks. Venus is retrograde and she will reverse back into Libra, whom she rules. This will give us a chance to have a do-over in some area of our lives, with harmony and stability as the intent/motivation.
We are smarter than we give ourselves credit for. One thing I’d like to point out is that (from viewing social media interactions) a few things are very misunderstood in our society. I’m going to focus on judgment vs. discernment and negative thinking vs. being realistic. These types of thinking are very different from one another, and the way I see it, many of us unfairly judge others in a harsher way than we really need to. Here is the way I look at these mindsets:
Judgment: A generalization involving condemnation of an entire collection of people, places or things. “Illegal immigrants are criminals. White people are entitled. Black people have a chip on their shoulder. You are (name a party), so you’re stupid/bad/ignorant.” Judgment involves pointing a finger.
Discernment: Discernment is an internal process based on self-knowledge. “This person looks like he/she might be dangerous so I’m going to cross the street. I really like this person, I’d like to get to know him/her better. We don’t agree, but we don’t have to talk about provocative issues to enjoy each other’s company. She stole from me before so I’m not going to hire her again.” Based a lot on internal balance, experience, learning and curiosity as well as self-preservation.
Negativity: “They’re bad, this is bad, that’s bad, it’s going to get worse, just wait, you’ll see how bad it’s going to get, people suck, nothing will work.” We all know at least one Negative Nancy or Ned. For whatever reason, the mind gets stuck in this mode and can’t get out of the rut. And we can’t fix it, which segues into:
Realistic: Everything is temporary. This situation could get better or worse depending on the weight of the factors involved. This person is dying. I can’t afford this right now, even though I want it. I know what I have to do in order to get from Point A to Point B and it’s daunting, but I’m doing it anyway. I’d better get this stuff put away indoors, it looks like it might rain. Not an easy state to be in because it demands continual assessment and facts as well as self-awareness.
That is my offering for this potent week of mysteries. Have a lovely celebration!
And keep looking after each other.

Aries (March 21- April 19): Crazy week coming up, but you’ve got this! Energy is really ramped up and an enduring Grand Trine in water signs may dampen your flame because of emotional drag. The good news for you is that Mercury will move into friendly Sagittarius this week, firing up your philosophical side and encouraging you to keep reaching for a distant dream or shore whether via a visit or correspondence. As the week progresses you’ll see a trend toward the emotional, the digging up of secrets, the skulking about of those who want to dig up dirt for their own gain. Stay out of it. This isn’t an easy time in general but you’re on top if you simply observe but not participate.
Taurus (April 20 – May 20): This week sees your Ruler Venus retrograde and revisiting your sector of Work/Health. This gives you the chance to undo something or redo it. Second chances are good and need to be taken advantage of. Chatty Mercury moves into your sector of Shared Assets/Intimacy, so you may be looking at a financial or business decision with your partner. There may be some risk taking involved. Your approach is basic and simple since you like to feel the ground under your feet. You’re one busy little bull, so be sure to get good rest and have time to unwind. Get a massage. Do your hair. Get pampered!
Gemini (May 21- June 20): This week sees an acceleration of emotion and exchange of rhetoric and genuine feelings. Since you’re one that likes to be in the middle of a debate or discussion about ideas or protocol, be sure to know when to pull back from the discussion and really listen to what’s going on. There is a lot of need to listen to what’s beneath the words, what’s behind the behavior and other exhausting requirements. Things are complicated but if they get too simple you get bored because you love puzzles! The week will feel frantic, and so will the weekend, especially Sunday. Hang in there and keep your nerves together! Your Ruler Mercury moves into your sector of Relationships, indicating a period of time in close communication with your closest peeps.
Cancer (June 21-July 22): This week sees emotions running high and a lot of reaching out or seeking out for the sake of an argument. You are one to intercept the prevailing mood, but don’t take it on as your own or you’ll sink yourself. Venus is retrograde and will revisit your sector of Home, giving you the opportunity to engage in some kind of a do-over. Mercury will move into your sector of Work/Health, and you may seek out alternative methods to healing or building strength. This is a good time to do it! As we hurtle toward midterm elections and the buildup of all emotions approaches a crescendo, keep your home and hearth nurturing and supportive of who you are at a deep level.
Leo (July 23-August 22): This week has some good stuff in store for you amid the chaos that has intruded into your life. An enduring Grand Trine in water signs sees an unleashing of emotions all over the place, including yours. You may feel overwhelmed and overpowered; if so, narrow your scope. Some things just have to take a back burner for now, be okay with that. Mercury sails into friendly Sagittarius, stirring your sector of Creative Expression and encouraging you to better your inner life in a new or different way. Venus is retrograde and will back into your sector of Thinking/Communication so that you can rethink or revisit something from weeks ago. A do-over is always a good thing and you’ll be able to reexamine something armed with more information.
Virgo (August 23-September 21): An enduring Grand Trine in water signs stirs up the emotions and possibly anxiety this week. Not a great surprise considering the prevailing mood of recent events and impending midterms. For you, you can harness and catch a flow if your attention is in the right place. Play your cards close to your chest and hang out with trusted people. Venus is retrograde and will back into your Financial sector; you may have a reassessment to do in that department, and Mercury moving into your sector of Home will help you make things fun and festive according to your own style. Your dreams may be quite vivid and possibly symbolic now.
Libra (September 22 – October 23): Quite a different dynamic to this week as compared to last week; a Grand Trine in water signs lasts all week and ups the emotional quotient across the board. You’re not an emotional person by nature, preferring to think things over before expressing a strong feeling. Be careful of the temptation to judge, though. People have things going on behind the scenes now more than ever, and you don’t have to figure them out, just tread lightly and be gentle. Your Ruler Venus is now retrograde and will back into your sign, giving you a chance to reassess some stuff. Mercury moves into fun loving Sagittarius, so expect some fun coming up as you and your friends can gather round for some raucous times!
Scorpio (October 24 – November 22): Jupiter in your sign rules a Grand Trine in water signs that lasts all week. Since Jupiter expands whatever it touches, be sure your contribution is gentle yet firm. Venus will back out of your sign and return to Libra while she’s retrograde, allowing you to reassess a new beginning or project and see how improvements can be made. Mercury will fly into your sector of Finances this week, tempting you to spend on something fun to lift your spirits. Be sure it’s something that will lift your spirits every time you look at it/use it! In general, this week will be fraught with incidents and events out in the Wild that will cause further consternation, but you know how to button yourself up, turn it off and restore yourself.
Sagittarius (November 23 – December 20):This week has a lot of emotion attached to it due to an enduring Grand Trine in water signs. Your Ruler Jupiter in your sector of Endings/New Beginnings is the strongest influence in this alignment, so it’s likely you’re living in two worlds at once while weaving them together in the present. Mercury sails into your sign this week, giving you the edge in terms of communication to get what you need. You’re stymied by the rash of strong emotions out in the wild, but your concern always is to extend a friendly hand when you can as long as someone is true and good in your estimation. Venus will roll back to your sector of Friends/Goals, so you and your buddies may take up something that had to get left behind before. Be happy!
Capricorn (December 21 – January 20): This week holds a lot of craziness due to an enduring Grand Trine in water signs that encourages emotions to be freely and widely expressed. We’re all tired of it in our own way, and your strategy is to control what you can, be in charge of what you’re good at and keep your head down. Not that you don’t have opinions. You do. This week may not be the best time to express them unless they have to do with something practical and tactile. Venus is retrograde and backs into your sector of Career/Ultimate Potential and you’ll get a chance for a do-over in an important matter. Mercury flies into your sector of Endings/New Beginnings, encouraging you to expand your mind, throw out unhelpful thoughts, judgement calls and negativity (not the same as being a realist). You can stock up on fun stuff and laughter under Mercury’s influence, so let the good times roll in between the icky things you may encounter.
Aquarius (January 21 – February 20): Whoa, Nelly! This week has plenty to keep you occupied due to a Grand Trine in water signs that is propelled by Jupiter’s participation in it. Jupiter is still in your Career/Ultimate Potential sector, so there could be some type of strong emotional energy around the workplace. Venus reverses into your sector of Expansion, encouraging you to reconsider an idea or strategy from a couple of months ago. Mercury will dance into your sector of Friends/Goals, bringing fun and frolic along, so look for good news, laughter and a general feeling of appreciation and support from your friends.
Pisces (February 21 – March 20): This week still features the Grand Trine in water signs, accelerating an already emotional period out in the wild and alternatively frustrating you and making you smile. Watch where your attention is placed so that you don’t get swamped with negative yukky stuff. If you start feeling overwhelmed, come up for air and visualize yourself standing under a warm and gentle waterfall, cleansing you of internal stress. Venus retrogrades back into your sector of Shared Assets/Intimacy, allowing you a second look at something in that department. Mercury sails into your sector of Career/Ultimate Potential, giving you a naughty spark in your eye and quick and witty responses in public. Grin your way through the week and stay warm!
