It’s always difficult for us to say goodbye to summer and especially to our Summer Reading Program. This year’s theme, Libraries Rock! was especially memorable and dynamic. In addition to lots of reading, we dressed up as rock stars, danced to local and visiting performers, made musical instruments, sang Karaoke, and even learned to play the ukulele.
More than 300 children and teens signed up for the 2018 program, which we kicked off in June with several rock star-themed events. For completing the program, participants received free paperback books, a coupon for a Sweet Retreat shaved ice, and chances to win grand prizes. The grand prizes were ukulele kits, movie passes, electronic keyboards, and gift certificates to A Place to Play. A majority of the prizes were provided by our wonderful Friends of the San Juan Island Library group. For more than a decade they have generously supported youth and family programming to promote literacy and life-long learning.
We might be a little biased but we think libraries rock all year long! Libraries are places of discovery for children and adults. Just because we are finishing the chapter on our Libraries Rock! summer theme, doesn’t mean the public has to stop exploring music related stories and learning. We have lots of information on playing musical instruments, biographies of favorite musicians, children’s music CDs and more.
Thanks again to everyone who helped make our 2018 Summer Reading Program a success. We look forward to next summer. In the meantime, we hope you’ll enjoy reading and discovering throughout the year.
