Fire Academy starts January 3, 2026. Orientation mid-December. Island Firefighting Is Different. Forget what you know about mainland fire departments. Orcas Island’s unique challenges require specialized equipment and creative solutions. Most island properties have no hydrant access, narrow roads, and challenging terrain.
Our firefighters master:
• Water dynamics – maximizing limited water supplies
• Drop tank operations – creating instant water sources
• WASP engine operations – navigating narrow driveways and rough terrain
• Pump operations – managing complex water delivery systems
You’ll train with the actual equipment you’ll use on real calls. Four months of intensive instruction. Live fire training. Hands-on skill development. Successful completion allows you to test for Firefighter 1 and Hazmat Operations certifications.
