Friday Harbor tops Orcas Island, clinches league title

210-dsc_3039Friday Harbor girls basketball team clinched the Northwest 1A/2B League title by topping Orcas Island 49-38 Saturday, Feb. 4.

“It was great,” said Friday Harbor coach Eric Jangard of the Wolverines’ second league title in three years. “It’s good for the program.”

The Wolverines finish the season 12-2 in conference and 14-6 overall. The visiting Vikings placed fifth in the league and were 7-7 and 9-9.

The island teams were knotted 9-9 after the first quarter but the Wolverines outscored the Vikings 10-9 in the second period. Friday Harbor sank 8 of 10 free throws while the Vikings 6 of 14.

Friday Harbor’s Tabatha Keane led all scorers with 15. The Wolverines other scorers were: Liz Taylor 14, Mandy Turnbull 8, Larissa Nash 4 and Kendra Meeker 4.

Bella Nigretto paced the Vikings with 12. The Vikings other scorers were: Kathryn Tidwell 10, Shelbi Rogers 6, Aliviah Garcia 4, Alicia Susol 2, Lana Bronn 2 and Tamara Klein 2.
