Friday Harbor hosts 4 dozen golfers from 6 schools in annual Invitational

The 9th annual Friday Harbor Invitational hosted 48 golfers from six different schools at the San Juan Golf Club on Friday May 3, 2024.  Wolverine sophomore Jack Hess, for the second year in a row, was low medalist with a 75. Joe Anderson from Orcas was only one shot back with a fine 76.  It’s a great time for Jack to be shooting his lowest scores as we’re about to head to the state tournament.

Joe Anderson Orcas 76, Jaxon Perry LaConner 77, Jack Hess Friday Harbor 75

Along with Jack we have a solid golf team.  It wouldn’t surprise me if we sent all six players to the state tournament.  Finn Graham, Ryan Rautenberg, Fisher Goosman, Sam Hurda and PJ Dison all have a good chance of moving forward.  Loomis Trail and Battle Creek are both very tight golf courses. The player who can keep the ball in play has the best chance to move forward.

The FH Invitational was created as a dress rehearsal for the District Tournament.  This year’s district will be hosted at the famous Loomis Trail Golf club next week.  The week after that we will be at the Bi-District event played at Battle Creek Golf Club.  From there we go to the Big Show, the high school state tournament, in Tumwater.

Morgan Douglass Friday Harbor 103, Livi Burton MVC 98, Lili Malo Orcas 94

Junior Morgan Douglass posted a solid 103 to place 3rd in the lady’s division for the second year in a row.  Lili Malo from Orcas won medalist with a 94.  Akira Tokunaga and Reese Tangney make up the lady’s team for Friday Harbor.  All the players are good enough to move forward to the state tournament.  I better put a call into the transportation department as we may need two vans for the state tournament.

To have even more fun, we offered a number of games for the players.  We played closest to the pin on the par 3s and long drive on hole 4 for both men and women.  Friday Harbor’s Morgan Douglass hammered a drive on 4 about 210 right down the middle, to win the long drive contest for the ladies.  I guess those afternoon workouts in the gym are really paying off!  The Friday Harbor boys team cleaned up on the closest to the pin contest, Finn Graham won KP on number 6 and PJ Nixon won KP on number 8.  The boss of the moss putting contest was won by Joe Anderson from Orcas.  This is a great group of talented, young golfers!

Friday Harbor High School is the only team in our league to host an 18-hole event.  Tournaments like this don’t just happen.  We couldn’t do it without my assistant, Gordy Waite.  So many others to thank:  SJ Club Ladies Golf Association and the SJ Golf and Tennis Foundation for sponsoring the taco bar;  The kitchen crew and Ricki for setting up such a great meal for the kids after the event; the Board and membership at the SJ Golf Club for allowing us to take over the golf course for a day;  the maintenance crew for showcasing our great little golf course; Bryan and crew at the golf club; Marcus King our new golf professional and team swing coach for bringing a real level of professionalism and class to our tournament; and all the unnamed helpers who jumped in to make this such a special day for 50 young aspiring golfers.  A big thank you too all….
