Slideshow: Balmer and Knapp, first man and woman across Island Loop finish line - Top 3 results posted

Paul Balmer was the first person across the finish line at Island Rec's 42nd Annual Island Loop 8K on Saturday, August 17, 2019 with a time of 31:30. Monica Knapp of Sammamish was the first woman across the finish line with a time of 36:49. In second place among the women was Tessa Nichols 39:24 followed by Tiffany Sivco 42:15. The top three results in each age category are posted below. Island Rec will post all of the results on its website Tuesday. We'll add a link to the list.  


Ben Colwell's Rum Line has fastest elapsed time in Shaw Island Classic

The currents were strong, the winds light and temperamental, for the 48 sailboats in the 49th annual running of the Shaw Island Classic. Hosted by the San Juan Island Yacht Club, the race is a highlight of the summer boating season, drawing sailors from throughout the region to circumnavigate Shaw Island. Racers can circle the island in either direction factoring in shifting winds, variable currents, narrow rocky channels and ferry traffic.


Betsy Wareham finishes 5th in Martin 242 North Americans in West Sound

Betsy Wareham, competing on her home water, guided Purple Martin to a fifth-place finish in the 2019 Martin 242 North Americans June 28-30 on West Sound on Orcas Island.

“In this fleet, with 27 boats, that’s quite an accomplishment,” said racer and organizer Ken Machtley.


2019 Martin 242 NA Championship at West Sound June 28-30; first time ever in WA state

Twenty-seven boats are registered to compete in the 2019 Martin 242 North Americans Championship (NAs) this weekend, June 28 to 30 in West Sound, Orcas Island. The Orcas Island Yacht Club in partnership with its title sponsor, Ullman Sails. is hosting the event. The list of participants is posted at the end of this article.

UPDATED: Friday Harbor finishes among top-eight fastpitch teams, wins 20 games

Friday Harbor finished among the top eight fast-pitch softball teams in Class 2B after a loss to eventual fourth-place finisher Chewelah in a state quarterfinal Saturday, May 25. The Wolverines won two games and lost two games at the state tourney in Yakima. They finished the 2019 season 20-6.
