In their final home match Friday Harbor seniors Leah Black, Ava Hoffman and Jenna Gizzi each recorded hat tricks and the Wolverines romped to a 10-2 victory over Auburn Adventist Tuesday, Oct. 30. With the Bi-District Tournament win, Friday Harbor clinched a Class 1B/2B state tourney berth.
The Wolverines next play Sea-Tac 1B League champion Concordia Christian (12-3) in the Bi-District Final at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3 at Interlake High School. The winner advances as the Bi-District’s top seed to state and the runner-up will be the No. 2 seed.
Friday Harbor (11-0-3) will be making its fourth state tournament appearance in five years. “This is a good team and it’s been their goal all year — win league, win district and go on to state and win state,” Hopkins said of the Northwest 1B/2B League champs.
The Wolverines soared past the Falcons (5-6) from the start, building a 6-1 first-half lead against the Sea-Tac 1B League runner-up. In addition to Black, Hoffman and Gizzi's three goals apiece, junior Joanna Evans added a late goal.
“We connected the ball well on offensive and the defense did a pretty good job,” Hopkins said.
The large lead allowed Friday Harbor’s reserves to gain some playoff action. “We were able to use some people we don’t usually use in the second half to get them some practice,” Hopkins said. “In the second half we didn’t play the starting unit on defense and they (the reserves) held them to one, so that’s not bad. They (Auburn) had some talent in front with good speed and footwork.”
